A good idea is to feed your chickens oats in the summer and whole corn in the winter

I think it might just be the way you raise them too. Kinda like dogs. My dad said growing up he had to take care of 1200 white leghorns. Said they were mean and flew around his head a lot. Maybe he just hated caring for that many chickens in general.
Ok so, What's your decision?Im getting back into raising chickens and was wondering thoughts on which breed to get for the most egg laying. I had RIR before and they were ok I had 9 birds but only got 6 eggs a day. What are everyones thoughts?
Red Sex Links are NICE! I didn't even socalize mine and they let me pet them and pick them up!Thanks. Im also looking for a bird that isn't to mean either. We have a 2 1/2 year old grand daughter that I want to be able to collect eggs with us when shes here.

Australorps and Isa Browns (one of many labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links) are definitely much better layers than the breeds you have now. I think adding the Australorp will definitely improve your laying rate.I've got 7 of various breeds and average 2 most of the year. We get excited when we get 4 a day for a while.
I've got silkie, Cochin x silkie frizzled and faverolles. I've just added an australorp but it not old enough to lay just yet. Hopefully it will be a better layer.
Years ago we had one australorp and two Isa browns and I am pretty sure we got more eggs from the 3 than we do now.
