Opinions on best egg layers

A good idea is to feed your chickens oats in the summer and whole corn in the winter

I think it might just be the way you raise them too. Kinda like dogs. My dad said growing up he had to take care of 1200 white leghorns. Said they were mean and flew around his head a lot. Maybe he just hated caring for that many chickens in general.

Im getting back into raising chickens and was wondering thoughts on which breed to get for the most egg laying.  I had RIR before and they were ok I had 9 birds but only got 6 eggs a day.  What are everyones thoughts?
Ok so, What's your decision?

My gold sex link lays a nice sized brown egg almost every day and has never gone broody or molted. My buff brahma gives me 3 or 4 eggs a week. My barred rock and Easter egger have taken a "break" from laying recently but hopefully they will start again. The blue/green eggs are a hit with my friends.

Some frequent layers have health issues but so far so good!

I loooooove my Leghorns. My first Leghorn is my favorite chicken! As a chick, she would jump onto your hand when you put it in the brooder, then climb all the way up onto your shoulder. She did that for the longest time. She still sometimes flies up onto my shoulder or head. Haha. There was a stretch where I got an egg a day for a few months (I knew it was her because she was my only white layer). She is so nice and I'd be so sad if she was gone. I got two more Leghorns last spring, and they are friendly, too, but nothing can trump my Lady Bird. :)

Amber Links seem really nice, too. And they lay really dark brown eggs. Australorps are probably my next favorite. I have two of those and one is so docile I could do just about anything to her, The other isn't bad, but she's got needle sharp spurs so I don't pick her up much.

I think the more you interact with your chicken, no matter what breed, they will be nice (more of the time). As for egg laying, again, my top are Leghorns, Austalorps, Buff Orpingtons, Golden Comets, and my Pekin duck. Haha!

wesnmads, you mean "egg"spert?

My best layer has by far been my Leghorn and she is very sweet and easily handled. My Barred and Americauna do well too and my RIR did well (she died last year from an unknown cause) I hear good things about Wyandottes and Orps...my Wyandotte is older so I hardly get eggs out of her these days, but she's a gorgeous lawn ornament. My Cochin isn't the best, and she tends to go broody...I inherited her from a friend who moved away otherwise I wouldn't really recommend them for laying personally.....MY Indian Runner ducks are FANTASTIC layers

My best layer so far has been my cinnamon queen. She is one great layer and very friendly and docile

Thanks. Im also looking for a bird that isn't to mean either. We have a 2 1/2 year old grand daughter that I want to be able to collect eggs with us when shes here.
Red Sex Links are NICE! I didn't even socalize mine and they let me pet them and pick them up!

My thoughts are that's darn good lol

I've got 7 of various breeds and average 2 most of the year. We get excited when we get 4 a day for a while.
I've got silkie, Cochin x silkie frizzled and faverolles. I've just added an australorp but it not old enough to lay just yet. Hopefully it will be a better layer.

Years ago we had one australorp and two Isa browns and I am pretty sure we got more eggs from the 3 than we do now.

Our faverolles and the australorp are super friendly.

Australorps and Isa Browns (one of many labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links) are definitely much better layers than the breeds you have now. I think adding the Australorp will definitely improve your laying rate. :o)
