Opinions on two coop choices

Thanks Oscarlet! I was checking out Craigslist earlier. I was thinking we could also do dog run panels and cover with 1/2" wire mesh, ect. for the run. We could then do an 8' x 8' run or bigger and then just order a hen house. Now my head is spinning! My chicks arrive in two weeks! at least the brooder is ready ; )

what if you spent the extra money making or buying a really big run? Our winters are so mild that you could maybe get away with a smaller coop if you had a really good size run...??? Chicken experts?!

I am no expert but agree given your mild weather I'd invest in a roomy run. One frequently cited rule is to give each bird 4 sq ft inside and 10 sq ft outside if they are confined - but more is even better if you have the room and resources. How often do you get storms that might drive them indoors for days at a time? If bad weather is very infrequent you probably could get by with a little smaller coop since they will only be sleeping and laying in it.

I'm in sunny southern California and it's very mild here : ) I've put in a message to the owner of the company to see if the run can be extended to 8' x 8'. If not then I'll be looking at dog run style of run and making it safe and secure for my hens and getting the 4' x 4' coop. We'll see! Thanks for the replies and I'm so glad I requested opinions prior to purchasing : ) I'll let you all know what I decide. If anyone has any other ideas please share.

Yep only rain. It did snow here once about 8 years ago and we've lived here 16 years, LOL! and that was just a dusting. Gotta love So. Cal!!

Oops! Forgot the run was covered so rain shouldn't be a big issue for you.

Only other thought - the configuration of the run with the low roof may make the run portion difficult to clean (speaking from experience). Trying to swing rakes and shovels in such tight quarters will be a challenge. You may need to cut the handles.

That makes a lot of sense fatcatx : ) I'm planning on using sand for the run and have heard it's really easy upkeep, so I'm hoping not to have to use shovels ; ) as I
would definitely be bonking myself in the face, ugh!

The models you were interested in had no "floor", meaning you would have to lock them in the coop at night for safety or install either apron or floor. Just something to be aware of. That craigslist "shed" is cut and would make a great coop, maybe3 they will come down a little on price.
