I Dont think she will succeed, but am a bit more worried than I would normally be. Co has an ever increasing liberal attitude. Translation: My dogs life is more important than you and your animals.
I do feel bad for the dog, but would really like to see the owner fined for violation of leash law. Why is it when something like this happens that police never issue a citation. Besides killing the animal if I were not able to scare it away, I would add fuel to the fire and sue for the cost of my chickens that were destroyed. I once showed restraint for my neighbors dog by firing at its feet because If I would have let my dog out he would have killed it, the only reason it is still alive is because he never made it to the chickens when I saw him.

The laws regarding controlling your animal and the rights of live stock owners is pretty clear. Because the dog could not be controlled my a voice command and the friend watching the dog did not bother to go out with the dog, the dog was shot. I personally am not about to put myself between my hens and a big strange dog covered in blood. Sounds like a stupid idea to me. It would not be a neighbor shooting the dog in my case, it would be me. The only law that maybe needs tweaking is the leash laws and their enforcement and the rights of other animal owners when an uncontrolled animal attacks. I would love to see automatic fines put in place. Very little enforcement.

I have dogs and chickens. They can live together with the help of a lovely thing called a tall fence. I do have neighbors dogs come by at times. Its rare but happens. Usually all it takes is a phone call because they have little escape artists that manage a break a couple times a year. Most times while I am calling they are running across a field already trying to catch their dogs. They put in the effort to be responsible, the same way we do.

This lady needs to get a clue about what personal responsibility is. Obviously she has not yet learned it but she should. If my dog killed someone elses pet or livestock, even if they did not shoot my dog I would still be over there accepting responsibility and paying expenses and taking some huge steps to ensure it didn't happen again. If they did shoot my dog then I would apologize for putting them in that situation and then again pay those expenses needed to set things right. When we take in an animal we take on more than just providing for them, we take responsibility for their actions and the responsibility to control them. Maybe we should make her write that 85,000 times. It might help.

Its pretty sad that we have to resort to SSS but hey we do what we need to do to protect the animals in our care. Probably would have been less of a headache if the dogs body just disappeared and she had no clue what happened.

“Ultimately, I would like to have that law appealed and maybe establish a law that would give dog and dog owners certain rights,”

Hey Lady, you have the right to keep your dog under control and out of my yard.

If she didn't want her dog shot, she should have kept it in her own yard.

In Colorado, it's a toss-up. The state is full of ranchers and livestock owners, but the big cities are full of socialist politically correct people who are completely ignorant about where their food comes from. A lot of times, the big cities have enough votes to overrun the country folk.

I checked out a facebook and got a bit irritated because any argument against what she thinks will be deleated. She doesn't want to take responsibility or hear that its her own fault and a whole 105 other people are that stupid too. So I started my own facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Responsible-pet-owners-against-bulas-law/170988586335658?sk=wall I am also linking this discussion there too. Someone else posted witht he newspaper to check out our forums also. These people need to be informed. Their dog is not any more special than anyone elses dog, cat, or chicken. Its not just a chicken, its not just live stock. These our the animals we raise, we care for, we are responsible for. If her dog was attacked she would be there demanding the other animal be put down.

Ugh, that owner's sense of entitlement is as wide as her sense of responsibility is small. Her grand plan for her dog while she was away for days was "stake it in the yard"? What!?!

At the very least she should have made reservations at a kennel, if she didn't want to fly her dog. She's deluded if she's yapping about 'animal cruelty' when she intended to leave her dog out for any old predator to take a bite. What happens when raccoons raid the food she left, and the dog has no food for the rest of the time she left him there? That lady is a waste of oxygen.

I do not think that this law change would pass in a county with a lot of agriculture, and it certainly won't spread even if it does go through. It is possible that they can get a change in a highly urban area, but that would impact a small number of farmers (though that would be upsetting for them).

I think this is a very big problem. I love dogs, but owners are responsible for them, and their pets pay for it when they are not responsible. If someone's dog comes into my yard and is a threat to any of my pets, I'm sorry, if I have to choose between their pet or mine, I pick mine. I'm sad that her dog had to pay the price for someone not caring for it properly, but that is no reason to change the law.
The dog could have also been hit by a car - and by the way in most states if someone's dog does get hit by a car, the driver has the right to sue the owner of the dog to recover the damages to their vehicle.
Bottom line - we all must be responsible for keeping our own pets safe.

Personally, the very LAST thing I would do is shoot a dog.
Many times people are just too trigger happy. And some even seem to get their jollies out of it,... IMO
I do think that there should be some sort of law about this problem..but I don't know what..
I think that the MAIN focucs should be fineing and legal action to the loose dogs owner.
Now if the said dog is acting human agressive..then, of course, you should be able to defend yourself as needed, even killing the dog if needed. If it is attacking...
I DO know that my dogs are NOT human agressive in any way.. so if you shoot my dog...instead of coming to me with a bill and the police (like you SHOULD do)... things would not go well for you after that..

With that said, no, I don't think that this lady will get very far at all with this petition.
Keep us informed on this! I'm interested in the outcome...

Edited because it was a mulitple post...
