I haven't read replies yet.

My opinion and this coming from a peaceful, non-violent liberal....If anything threatens harm to anything on my property or in my home, I will do what I need to do to protect my home, animals, family, and property. I don't feel that right should be taken away. People have a responsibility to keep their pets in their control or they are putting their pets in danger. Seems that should be incentive enough.

Now, going back to read replies.

Here, I could come to you with the bill, the sheriff, and the dogs carcass, and the law would be on my side. You seem to acknowledge that a dog is not as valuable as a person, in that a dog attacking people must be stopped. Dogs are property. So are chickens. If your dog is killing someone else's livestock why do you expect them not to shoot it?

If the dog was chasing cattle instead, and somebody's $20,000 bull stepped in a hole and broke its leg and had to be put down, would you still rather have the bill? How would anyone get that kind of money out of you?

Oh redhen redhen redhen redhen...opp's, sorry, got stuck!

(edited to add: was just giggling over the multiple posts, sorry, that wasn't very clear)
Anyway, this kind of thing is very likely to be something that comes up more and more often as cities get larger and encroach more and more into farm land. These folk's see no good reason why poor Fido who "wouldn't hurt a flea" should loose his life over killing "just a chicken". So they start these bleeding heart petition's that are completely one sided and they ram it down your throat in the store parking lot, hurridly get a signature and on to the next one. They don't care about anything beyond themselves and don't care to think about why it is legal in the first place for these dogs to be shot when they are pulling this kind of crap. I guess they don't consider either that a chicken killing dog easily moves on to larger and more challenging prey.

There are very good reasons why things like this don't belong in front of voters who are likely to be largely urban/suburban and with little or no understanding of what farm life is like. They are simply painted a picture of poor Fido being shot down in mid stride by a gun crazy rancher while playing innocently in green fields.

Unfortunately in this country we are slipping more and more into not requiring people to have the slightest amount of responsibility or common sense over themselves but to act like fools and then lay the blame on someone else.

Sorry Red, I have to agree. You can sink a lot of money into a cow, only to have someone's "Pet" destroy that. It isn't just a money issue. One cow, one chicken, one duck could set your breeding project back a year or more. It's unacceptable.

She won't get 85K signatures.

It wouldn't pass if she did.

She needs to work through the grief of losing her dog, the guilt she feels for not being a responsible pet owner which ultimately caused her dog's death, and do better next time to keep her pets safe.

Fair warning? Please.
