Recently one of our duck coops ended up with a rusty hole in the removable metal tray at the bottom (and our girl ended up eating some of it, she's in treatment right now, she'll be OK I think). Obviously I do not want this to happen again, but I feel like maybe metal isn't the best solution for a removable tray. I was thinking maybe a polycarbonate sheet or something similar in a plastic material, and I could fit it into the trays instead of the metal sheet? I feel like wood may warp or splinter. What do you use for your tray to make cleaning as easy as possible while keeping your ducks safe?

Hi there, hope you're enjoying BYC! :frow

I'm not keeping ducks at this point, but have felt your concern over the stupid metal trays inside every coop made. :hmm

Inside my custom built coops, depending on if walk in or not I have successfully used both roll vinyl flooring (walk in) and plastic corrugated board (not walk in) known as cloroplast. If you still have sufficient structure these extremely easy materials to work with and fairly affordable and durable..

Wood (ply wood) painted with a hardy outdoor glossy finish has also worked well for me even with using a poo scraper/flat shovel scoop. Non painted does absorb moisture and turn nasty.. in addition to no longer sliding as needed for cleaning once wet.

Best wishes finding a great solution! :fl

I ended up at Lowe's and grabbed a sheet of plexi that I had them cut down to an exact size. It actually slipped right in where the metal tray went... Couldn't have gone any smoother. I'm crossing my fingers that this will work out well, but so far so good!
