Orange County California

I grew up in FV and w live in neighboring Long Beach. We can keep 20 hens but not everyone can in LB and the city is trying to make it easier. We are trying to get people in los angeles together to work on legalization efforts. My mom still has a house there so i can probably help. Let me know if you want to strategize. There are things to do to help with neighbors. They are much quieter than you would expect. The neighbors called once and thr animal control person said we couldn't have them and we said we could based on the code and that ended that. The animal control and code enforcement don't really know. You need the codes to support you and if the codes don't it's time for a change.

sure, I'd like to strategize. I left another message for animal control in response to their notice of violation. I asked them for specifics on what it is that I'm in violation of. The only thing that they can get me on is that the coop is too close to one of my three neighbors (ordinance states that I have to be 25 feet away from property lines).

I am also in RSM and would like to consider having chickens. Were you able to find any additional info? Several of my neighbors do, but I am concerned as an association guy lives 2 doors down. Any help would be appreciated, I haven't been able to find any info through the city.

I live in Santa Ana and just last year the ordinance changed to have them. We can have 4 from what I understand. The coup must be 30'from the neighboring property.

I was told by one Fountain Valley mayor you could keep hens as pets, by another Huntington Beach mayor that this FV code might not work although it is clearly described and ok for Huntington Beach code, and by another Fountain Valley councilwoman that she does not think they would change the code as there are violations in Midway City next door with chicken killing businesses.

My opinion is; if they have dogs and cats, chickens should DEFINITELY be allowed. They are wonderful animals.

You need to check with your association, if you have one, it will be in the CC&R. In Mission Viejo - Pacific Hills - they are specifically called out as not permitted. Actually they have a pretty big list of forbidden animals.

Funny though - my neighbor can have 3 dogs that stink up the yard so bad there are days when you can't stand next to our common wall without practically gagging. But we can't have a couple of chickens. Go figure.

In Anaheim, it's based on the size of your lot (we can have 4.22 hens, no roosters). Simply google the name of your city, chicken, and ordinance, and the right information should pop up.

For the city of Costa Mesa - I found that you can have chickens, but you need a permit.

Permits
Keeping of non-domesticated animals, livestock, reptiles, aviaries, and more than five domestic animals is prohibited unless a special permit has been granted. Permits are issued at the discretion of the chief of police and Costa Mesa Animal Control and may be revoked for any violation of regulation. There is a one-time $15 non-refundable fee to apply for a permit. An annual permit fee is due within 10 days of approval and due each year thereafter. Please call (714) 754-5235 with licensing or permit questions.

I grew up in Newport/Mesa, and I'm depressed at how fast I saw the place go downhill. I grew up with duck ponds, froggy bogs and creeks, and now all I see are condos and landscaping. Sigh. But that's good to know that you can get a permit to keep chickens, they didn't even have THAT option back in the 90;s and I had to give up my chick Lemon Drop to my grandmother in Arizona.
