Orange Tabby...He Stays and His Name is Finn (Update with Videos Dec 31)

He has a medium motor, not terribly loud, but it idles quite a bit. DH bought him a laser toy to see if he could get him to do more than sleep. I wonder if he even hunts. I've never seen him actually do it more than half heartedly and certainly never saw him catch anything.

He sounds like Fred, the neighborhood cat. Fred likes to hang out at my house, but in no way feels responsible for doing any hunting. I saw him pounce on a rat once only to carry it about 5 feet away to let it go. Apparently Fred believes in "catch and release".

Oh, no, Fred! Guess old age has its privileges.

The laser pointer is a huge hit. Finn was skidding all over the floors, rolling up the area rugs trying to catch the red dot. And when it would disappear, he'd look around for it, puzzled because he thought it was under his paw. Maybe it will awaken his hunting instincts.

Four of my five boys love to kill the little red dot. The fifth looks at it and goes "Meh". The other boys will group hunt it though. It is a great game. They even know the sound of the drawer that the dot lives in and will come running when I open it. :)

Last year I dog sat my sister's four month old puppy while she had surgery. My two dogs are old and slowing down, so the puppy didn't get enough exercise to wear her out before bedtime. She too loved the little red dot, so I had the brilliant idea to take her and the laser pointer outside. I ran that puppy in huge circles all over the yard. I assumed that she would quit when she got tired. Nope. I finally quit because I got tired. I took everyone inside and put us all the bed. The poor puppy laid there and panted/heaved for at least 45 minutes. I felt HORRIBLE. I almost killed the dog with the laser pointer! My nieces might never have forgiven me. Mom goes in for scary surgery and Aunt Wessie kills our dog. Great memories.

Oh, my, good thing I wasn't drinking coffee just then!

It was bad. Really, really bad. I laid there in the dark listening to that dumb dog wheeze and pant dreading the moment that I didn't hear it. How do you tell three small children that you killed their puppy with the laser pointer? What kind of idiot dog will chase the darn thing until it passes out? Sheesh.

Not the brightest bulb in the package, I guess, eh?

ETA: The puppy, I mean, not you!

It didn't occur to me that a puppy would chase the red dot like a cat.

I've heard coyotes a lot over the baby monitor the last few nights, though not too close. I hope Finn is careful if he goes out at night, especially.

ETA: Finn really loves this crocheted bed.
