Orange yolks

Is there a special feed to get eggs with orange yolks? While we're fortunate to get fresh eggs daily, they don't taste any different from store bought. Do orange yolked eggs taste different?

No, they taste the same. Orange egg yolks just have more beta cartotenoids from eating greens, bugs, etc, or plants that contain the natural orange color(marigold, paprika)

Alfalfa, greens, grass, clover, sprouts, and yes they taste a world of difference to me, and everyone that eats my eggs says they are the best eggs they have ever eaten. I almost forgot: fresh peas!

Dark leafy greens can help darken up yolks. One of my favorites is carrot greens, as they contain a good amount of beta carotene and are usually thrown out. My chickens enjoy them.

Sometimes after my dad mows the lawn, I take the clippings to feed the chickens. The yolks aren't super orange but pretty deep yellow.

Grass sounds expensive? I guess since it doesn’t grow great in my shady yard, maybe.

For healthy, orange-yolked eggs, I imagine you’d do better buying regular layer feed ($14/50 lbs at my local TSC) and $10 worth of leafy greens from the grocery store than a bag of organic feed ($24/40 lbs).

And that’s not even considering that the regular feed gives you 10 more pounds for that price.

If you like to garden, you can just grow your own. I've started a separate rabbit/chicken garden this year.
