New to your website and message board, Hello from Iowa.
I moved to the country in Iowa about 11 months ago and have always wanted to raise chickens. Well, I've been lurking the info here at backyard chickens, and finally placed the order today with MMcmurray breeders for live chicks. I then informed the husband that "cluckingham palace" chicken coop (seen on this site) would be a great birthday present for me, preferably before my chicks arrive in three weeks!
A question - planning on keeping the chicks in a baby pool in the garage under a red heat lamp for the first few weeks. I ordered 25 chicks - will this be enough room?
I have 6 ducks raised from ducklings last October that have now moved outside to a fenced area & small house. They run wild & fly during the day, but always pen themselves by dark each night. (I'm the lettuce lady to them, and they'll never leave home.) We've had no problems with predators thus far as the German Shepherd believes the ducks are his friends.
(Hope he feels the same about chickens.)
I ordered a meat-n-egg mix and also bought the vaccinations for each chick. I bought QuikChic starter also. Were these good choices?
Any other beginner tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey New Chick
Your pool will be plenty of room, but in about 7-10 days they will be trying to fly out.
At first, i vaccinated my chicks when i bought little ones, then i read the mereks was mainly in large amounts of chickens, not home flocks,( if i misread, someone please correct.) so now i dont spend the extra little bit. I havent ever had any health issues scince I quit ordering the vaccinations.
if you have any more questions, feel free to email.

Sounds like all good choices to me!! you can put something over the top of the wading pool, someone talked about putting another pool upside down on top, cutting vent holes and duct taping screen for air vents, and as openings for putting a light. If you do do that, I'd watch the heat inside though, it sounds like on a warm day it could get reallllllly warm in there. You've seen the temperature recommendations for directly under the lamp, allowing for much cooler on the edges so they can get to cooler areas too right? 95 degrees directly under the lamp area for the first week, the raising the lamp so it goes down by 5 degrees about every week till it's 70 deg or so... I think you must have read a lot and it sounds like you've got a good grip on things!

Have FUN!!!
