New to your website and message board, Hello from Iowa.
I moved to the country in Iowa about 11 months ago and have always wanted to raise chickens. Well, I've been lurking the info here at backyard chickens, and finally placed the order today with MMcmurray breeders for live chicks. I then informed the husband that "cluckingham palace" chicken coop (seen on this site) would be a great birthday present for me, preferably before my chicks arrive in three weeks!
A question - planning on keeping the chicks in a baby pool in the garage under a red heat lamp for the first few weeks. I ordered 25 chicks - will this be enough room?
I have 6 ducks raised from ducklings last October that have now moved outside to a fenced area & small house. They run wild & fly during the day, but always pen themselves by dark each night. (I'm the lettuce lady to them, and they'll never leave home.) We've had no problems with predators thus far as the German Shepherd believes the ducks are his friends.
(Hope he feels the same about chickens.)
I ordered a meat-n-egg mix and also bought the vaccinations for each chick. I bought QuikChic starter also. Were these good choices?
Any other beginner tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!
