Ordered Turkeys Whatt happens if...

Well I got on Cackles website and its either a large white or Royal Palm. So based on their current size I would haveto say Royal Palm!

Also I spoke with Cackle after they received the pics and they are sending me the Burbon Reds and some packing peanuts!

Good for you, I kind of figured they would make it right when they saw a pic. Now what to do with the packing peanuts.

I received my Bourbon reds this am!!!!!! Now my question is I only intended on having 9 turkeys the burbon reds and the three bronze my DH bought from the feed store. Wellm I now have 13. I am not sure what I am going to do with every one but I wanted to breed so that I have turkeys in the years to come.

I have bourbon reds, bronze (not sure if they arejust bronze or broad breasted bronze) and royal palms. Of these groups what ages do you reccommend processing for each type?

Also, If I keep everyone together and seperate during breeding season so I get pure breeds will they intergrate back together ok?

You will find the Palms not to be the best table bird meat wise, taste wise they are good. They are about the only heritage variety that wasn't bred for meat, that and they have a shallow breast bone so they don't fill out as much as the others.

For processing a BB type is ready in 4 to 5 months depending on how big to want them. For a heritage all the books say 6 months but we like ours filled out more so we go about 8 months. I think an older bird has more flavor as well.

When you seperate them into breeding groups you will upset the pecking order and once again when you put them back together. So they will have to sort it out but alot of people do that. They will fight getting it sorted out and after that they will be fine.
