ordering chicks mayB

Exactly! Where I live we'll have a high of 68 today, but the day after tomorrow the high is forecast to be 30 degrees. Temps are all over the scale this time of year.
I ordered my chicks from Ideal - in the springtime. Ideal is in Cameron, TX which is only six hours away from us. Still took three days to get them, which shows that the USPS didn't exactly make a beeline to my house.

gritsar, how did it go with ideal?

I was very happy with the customer service from Ideal and my chicks (now full grown) are a real hardy bunch. I did lose two in shipping, those two appeared much smaller than the rest. Everyone else arrived chirping away and never had a bit of illness or weakness with them *knock on wood*.
I misunderstood your original post. If you are going to order from MPC and they won't ship until the end of February, you'll probably be just fine. February is the worst month of winter around here, but usually not so bad in Georgia and northern Florida (I've lived there).
If you wait until springtime to have your chicks shipped, Ideal will send less than the standard 25 chicks. You just have to be sure and tell them not to include any "packing peanuts" (male chicks) and pay a small amount in shipping insurance. They have a minimum dollar amount, not a minimum chick amount.
I know it's hard to wait to finally get those little fuzzy butts, but we have to take the chicks well-being into account. A chick that's already been under the stress of being chilled have a harder time from the start as opposed to chicks that have a nice warm ride on the way to their forever home.

I live in Florida. Like the previous poster (Skand) I get my chicks from Ideal, who are located Texas, so we don't have to worry too much about the weather.
