Well....the fever is kicking in again. I am wanting to get a couple of silkies and thought about ordering a couple from my pet chicken. Only thing is, I am not to sure about ordering chicks. Plus they are only a day old it says when they actually ship them. How delicate are the chicks to raise at that young of an age? The first ones I got were already 4 weeks old when I got them. And I did not order them. They were locally picked up.

I am just curious as to if anyone has bought from them before. Also I would order FEMALES. But HOW do they tell at such a young age the actual sex of the chick? Any input would be appreciated as to if they recommend another place, or their experience with my pet chicken. And since I am relatively new to chickens....only had chicks now for going on 3 weeks. Do you really think I am capable of caring for chicks that young? I don't work so that is not an issue as far as being here to take care of them daily. I'm just scared I will get them and end up hurting them or worse killing them due to something stupid on my part. And I don't want to do that. I'm just not sure how hardy chicks that young are.

So please let me know your input and I will check back a little later before I decide if ordering is a good thing or I should wait.

Thanks everyone!!

You can do it! And you can spoil them rotten! Get your brooder ready and enjoy your babies!

I've never ordered from them but I have ordered day olds from other places and they were in the mail for three days and arrived safe and happy. They are tougher than I thought.

I say do it too. Day olds are very easy to care for and are hardy little guys. I have never had silkies but i have had over 60 shipped to me by mail from cackle and they were opened by my two year old twins to "play" with. I would do it in a heart beat again and it is so cute to be woken up by their little chirping!

Don't worry about being able to care for them. They need the basics: food, water, warmth and safety from kids/dogs/etc. 10 of the 12 chicks we've gotten have been 1-3 days old and I haven't lost one yet! It's good to be gentle with them, but they're not made of glass. Like human babies! Reasonable handling won't hurt them. You can do it!

Some of the breeds have fairly obvious differences between the sexes from birth. The hatcheries usually guarantee "90% accuracy" with their sexing.
Good luck!

INSTEAD OF MY PET CHICKEN WHY DONT YOU ORDER THEM FROM XTREMEGAME BIRDS.COM OR IDEAL HATCHERY AS THEY ARE BOTH THERE IN TEXAS WITH YOU AND THE LIL FELLA WONT BE STUCK IN THE MAIL ANY LONGER THAN NECESSARY....

AS FAR AS MAILING CHICKS, WELL FOLKS BEEN DOIN' IT FOR DECADES! THEY TOLERATE IT QUITE WELL BELEIVE IT OR NOT!

CARING FOR THEM IS EASY, JUST AS THE OTHER POSTERS HERE HAVE SAID--- FOOD WATER WARMTH AND SAFETY! THEY'LL DO JUST FINE AND THEY ARE SO ADORABLE AS FRESH HATCHLINGS! GIVE IT A WHIRL AND HAVE FUN!

But you cannot order Silkie pullets.

My sweet little girl, Angel, was renamed "Mr. Angel" at six months' of age.

Thanks for that tip on the local place to order from JJMR794!!! I am gonna check them out. I think since everyone has only had POSITIVE things to say about shipping that i am gonna go for it. Will let you all know what I ordered.

Hopefully I will be able to restrain myself to only a FEW.

I ordered from MPC. NOT a single problem. All of my chicks arrived safe, healthy, and correctly sexed. I would order from them again!!

Getting chicks through the mail worksout great. My hubby made me a brooder out of a storage tub, I used a long one, he cut half of the inside of the lid and covered the hole with rabbit wire. A heat light can be hung over the opening to keep them warm, keep an eye on temp so they don't get too warm, You can raise or lower the heat by moving the lamp up or down and if they start to get too hot they move to the side without the lamp. You won't be able to order hens because they can't sex silkies, I thought I had a hen and 8 months later I had a roo.
