Ordering spring chicks....so much fun. What did you get?

What is a “mystery” vs “extra” chick? 🤔
I ordered two “unique and rare” hatchery choice birds and those are the birds I got from that. They shipped me one more bird than I ordered which is the “extra” it’s pretty common with shipped birds because then if you lose one their live arrival guarantee is easier to rectify would be my guess…

Oh cool! I ordered an assortment from them due to hatch on Easter. So I guess mine will all be mystery chicks. ❤️

My shipment arrived today!!! All arrived chirping and active. I ordered from Mt healthy.

2 EE
2 OE
2 Wellsummer

Mystery chicks are a Partridge Rock and Blue Rock.

Extra is either a second Blue Rock or OE

I find ordering new chicks so much fun. I have a small backyard (front yard) flock and just ordered 4 new chicks for the spring. I am excited to learn what you ordered/plan to order or are excited for the 2023 year. I ordered a salmon faverolle, a bielefeder, a buff orpington and a lakeside egger. What did you get or are planning to get?
We ordered 3 more black astralorps and three red comets. It will be our first experience with sex links. And 2 red and blue wyandottes from another breeder. Those will be the closest thing to peacocks I will have!

Oh my gosh they are so floofy! Your light grey EE is adorable, I had one almost that color last year (no tan on her though), and now she grew up to be white with grey flecks all over her! I bet your OE are half FBCM, so the eggs should be a nice olive! 😊
I think the light gray is actually the Blue Rock chicken. They’re all supposed to be pullets but her growing comb makes me nervous at 4 days old. I won’t worry too much yet because they do look like they can be a large combed breed.

I agree that the OEs looks to be BCM mixes which is exciting. I was half hoping to get a Maran as one of the Rare and Unique assortments but that’s ok I’m happy getting the Partridge Rock and Blue Rock

I have 3 dark ones (mostly black) which I think are the OE with BCM lineage. Very happy with my order and MT Healthy just crossing my fingers that as many make it to laying age as possible.

Maybe she is more tan then gray? The 5th one has a pea comb, that’s the one I thought was your EE. They darker grey one I agree is a Blue Rock. The comb does look big, but Blue Rocks do have bigger combs, and Blue rocks are sex-linked. Does it have a spot on its head?

Oh yes I misunderstood you she is a tanish yellow tinted to my eyes and I agree she is an EE by my best guess. I have another that looks like her but slightly less fluffy.

I don’t think the blue/gray hen has a yellow dot. She’s under the brooder plate but I’ll check again when she comes out. Yellow dot mean Roo correct?

Yes dot is roo, but there can be a little yellowish mixed in throughout just not a prominent dot!

Are you sure they’re sex link? I haven’t found that on any hatchery page or elsewhere… Plymouth yes but since it’s a cross I wouldn’t be so sure.

This is when I first unboxed them. There is a bit of a yellow dot… hmm.

EDIT: Sorry I doubted you this is right from the hatchery website 🤦‍♀️

“The Blue Rock results from crossing Barred Plymouth Rocks and Blue Andalusians leaving us with a sex-linked, production breed. These striking birds are monochromatic – hens being largely light gray fading into a charcoal head. Your rooster has that same light gray bottom half but with charcoal barring from the hackle to the tail. As chicks they have a lot of variety in color, ranging from nearly lavender to black. Blue Rocks are quite hardy and cold tolerant.”

Soooo since I ordered all pullets I’d hope they didn’t mess it up. Time will tell.
