When ordering unsexed chicks from a hatchery how many should you order per each female chick you want? Is it a 50/50 split?

Well consider murphys law of chickenology: every bird that you think will be a hen will inevitably be a roo, so if I were you I would order a few more birds than I would need, just to be safe and be sure you are getting enough hens.

I just dont want to order 10 unsexed hoping to get at least 4-5 hens and end up with 9 roosters

Well at that point, it's time for some chicken pot pie or chicken stew.

Thats pretty good, but I have heard stories of people getting like 20 unsexed chicks with about 15 roosters!

I ordered 9 str run. I got 3 roos and 6 hens. I was hoping for 3 hens and was going to sale or give the others away.

I ordered 25 straight run EE chicks from McMurray a few years ago and received 26 PULLETS! So, ya just never know!
I did promise myself that I would NEVER order straight run again, because next time it's bound to be 26 cockerels.

On the other end of the spectrum I received 26 straight run Delawares from a hatchery that doesn't sex their chicks. I ended up with nine pullets and seventeen cockerels.
