Whoowho I'm excited. A real swap meet, I don't think we even have those in Alaska! haha

I have one chick thats 5 weeks old and the rest will be 3 weeks old on Saturday. I should be able to tell sex somewhat accurate by the swap meet for sure. Here's one pic of the blue/splash ones but I'll get some better ones tonight. I'm thinking $3? Mainly because I want these boogers gone, so I'm flexible.

I go away from the computer for 24 hours and 2 and a half pages of stuff happens, LOL!
Chickboss, I would be happy to bring you an assortment of purebred eggs to the swap for you too. It will probably be an assortment of whatever is laying if you would like them? I have been loosing about 2 birds per week to a skunk or weasel too. I am setting up my live traps tonight. Last time we caught our own kittens but in the past we have caught 2 skunks, a mink or pine martin and several rats. We have lost the most chickens to skunks I think, and then raccoons. My Livestock Guardian dogs have really done a great job over the past 2 years until this past 2 weeks, (the predator is taking them from a side the dogs can not get to). Though my peafowl seem to go off every time this happens, so I will be out there tonight when they do.
PS- Off of the subject, but I am nearly positive my guineas have eliminated every hornet, wasp and yellow jacket within 1/4 mile of the poultry yards. My husband is highly allergic and these birds are probably the best investment I have ever made! For the past 2-3 years before we got the guineas, my kids couldn't play outside in the summer for 20 minutes before being stung or attacked. I can only remember reading that guineas ate these pests in one article a long time ago and never found it again, though I have found lots of info about them eating ticks, bugs, mice and snakes (also things that I prefer to not have living near my house). I have a bunch of eggs in the bator, I hope they hatch. I found a nest with 63 eggs, so not sure they are all good. I have found these birds to be absolutely delightful as long as you don't have any close neighbors and can handle the noise.

But I really want to do this, and that may mean that I need to start looking in the LGD direction. So far, we have only caught the one skunk, but the way it was done really suggests that it was either a weasle, or if skunks, then more than one. Our trap is still set, so we'll see.

I would love to try raising guineas. They seem like so much fun. Just how noisey are they anyway?

ETA, I think I am going to give up on the idea of making a large movable coop, and stick with some of the smaller designs even though it means more building. I think they can be made more secure. Jen, I was on your website last night and you have a very nice set up. Do you find that Oxine (sp?) becomes expensive to use on that large a scale or is it still cost effective? Where do you purchase yours? I read about it on another thread somewhere, sounds like great stuff.

My Livestock Guardian dogs have been amazing for the most part. It was after we lost all those birds a few years back, my husband kept telling me "no we can't have any more dogs until our older ones pass away", they were 12 and 13 years old at the time. I listened to him say that for a couple years and then after loosing nearly 150 chickens over a 2 months period (including my huge flock of Seramas, and several Silkies and Cochins that were shipped in from the best breeders around the country- it seems like they knew which ones were the most expensive or most irreplaceable or my favorite, because, those are the ones they always got) I cried for days. Still my husband didn't change him mind. We locked up our retriever mixes in with the chickens at night only to awake to killed chickens right in the same pen or the next one over, the dogs slept right through or just didn't care. Finally one day, I saw some LGD's on Craigslist in Portland and over a week or two they had sold all but two (they were rather expensive). I told my husband" We are going to get some Livestock Guardian Dogs today". And he kind of looked at me to see if he could argue and realized that was hopeless. So I got my dogs, (they were 8-10 weeks old) and put them right into a barn central to all of the chicken pens. We never lost a chicken from that day on, that is until this past month. I lost a few right next to my house (the dogs can not get there) the two at the back of the pens and I watched a HUGE Owl fly away with one of my laying hens right at dusk as we were getting ready to lock them in the barn for the night. One of these days, we are going to build a dog run that encompasses the whole poultry yard, but this is timely and expensive since my poultry yard is about 1/2 to 3/4 acre.

PS- The guineas are LOUD- just a hair quieter than peacocks but a more annoying sound and more continuous. I am happy to have both here though. It sounds like we live on a farm in a tropical jungle, LOL!

OregonJen, thanks for the info. 150 in just two months...wow. That would wipe me out completely. That must have been a really hard time for you. I will be looking into it because I don't want to see this happen again. My dogs are people dogs, and they wouldn't know what to do with themselves if I tried leaving them in with the chickens. I think they would just bark all night, lol, which may be good for keeping critters away, but horrible for us trying to sleep. Plus, they were house dogs before we moved here and are five years old. I don't think we would want to change their place here. How are your LGDs around the family? What did you do differently in terms of raising them aside from housing them with the chickens from day 1?

Yeah, one of these days I will have to get a coupld of guineas. I like how my peafowl sound. I wouldn't mind seeing if the guineas get on my nerves or not. Our property is funny, because we are in a bit of a small valley or ravine we can hear everything from the neighboring properties, but apparently they hear nothing from us. We are in the sweet spot I guess.
