Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

I just thought you all would like to know that in my area, protective roosters are in high demand. Seriously. I posted my Blue Andalusian and could have given 6 of him away in just 3 days. I wrote up a description and posted pics. I said he was not to be eaten and of course I played up his good qualities. I just wanted to find him a good home, so I offered him for free. Someone picked him up today and now I have to go email everyone who didn't get him to say I am sorry someone else got him.
So if anyone has a rooster who needs rehoming, now's the time. I am actually going to refer my second choice to this forum to see if he can find a roo. He lost his roo 'Spiderman' recently and needs a good guardian for his free-ranging flock. He's hoping for one that is 1-2 years old and is not concerned about it challenging people or being slightly aggressive (he said his last roo earned his name by hiding under cars, then leaping out to attack feet passing by!) So if you know anyone with a roo they can't keep but like well enough to roar trip to the Rogue Valley, let me know!

Refer them to me! I have a black silkie roo that I need to find a home for, I'm giving him with his favorite girl cuz I can't bear to separate them! I posted pics earlier in this thread!

Thought I would pass this info. I picked up my runner ducks and a turkey this past weekend. The breeder I went to has quite a few turkeys hatching, heritage turkeys (bad thing, all the royal palms are already gone) I ended up with a Chocolate. Don't know the sex yet, but I named it Nestlee. Anyway, if anyone is interested in a turkey (there are $15.00 each), send me a PM and I can give you the breeders phone number. She lives in Ridgefield WA.

Try posting on the Medford craigslist... that's what I did. Some CL people can be sketchy, but many wrote in with descriptions of the housing/life that my rooster would have with them. Several sounded very promising, but I have yet to hear back if they would accept a different rooster than the one I originally offered.
And BTW your slikies are adorable! I am sure they will find a great home.

The faire, (www.shrewfaire.com) is September 10th and 11th this year in King's Valley (near Philomath) And it is the 16th annual this year! If you could only go to ONE faire in the state, this is the one. I make masks from feathers, bone, and leather (with normal stuff like paper mache, plaster, etc) and charms and wands from the feet of chickens dried around stones. Sounds a tad creepy, I know, but they look cool and draw people in as well as preventing the parts we won't eat from going to waste. My feelings are that the best way to honor the dead is to make sure that there life was not wasted and to remember them in a beautiful way. I will post the mask pics I have now, but I haven't had a chance to upload any others (including the feet!)
Any masks and such that don't sell I plan to bring to the swap. Most of the ones I have pics of have sold already (hence the need to make more!) but it gives you an idea.

And here's one of my crowd at Faire. I think it's from 2 years ago.

Tam'ra,
Have you ever done anything other then the masks with the feathers? Like headpieces or combs? Hair decorating stuff? The reason I'm asking is I was looking for something, (not real fancy, small but nice) to use in my hair. Jim and I didn't have a church wedding and we have been talking about having one. Small and simple. And I thought that having combs or somthing made from chicken feathers would be so cool! I thought about trying to make something (I do jewelry), but I haven't ever worked with feathers. If you haven't done this sort of thing but have advice working with feathers, that would be awesome too! If I can't get something for my hair, maybe I could make a small bouquet and add feathers to it. Just a thought....
Thanks,

Actually, I just got the metal bits to make feathered hair combs and hair pins in the mail TODAY!!! I admit, I am excited. I have been wanting to do this for the faire since I got chickens. So far, I have only made a few hair ornaments (for my friends' wedding I made hair combs for all 5 bridesmaids with scraps of the wedding dress, which we made, and tail feathers from my BLRW) and one feathered head dress, but I plan to do more. Many more. I ordered something like 100 combs and 60 hair pins and we bought beads and went through my feather boxes... but I ramble on.
I could give you tips if you'd like. Or if you want me to make something(s) for you, I could do that too. Any idea what colors you would want? My signature reflects the colors of feathers I have, plus some black and partridge. I have very little white, but you might not want white in your hair anyway, depending on your hair color.
I will post pics of combs as I get some done. It won't be for another week or more though because I HAVE to finish my chicken coop before I play. Either that, or my devious little chickies will come up with even more insidious plans of escaping their current enclosures.

Just an update, I found Lahnee and Loonah a new home! They now live In the country over by sweet cheeks winery! And my Lahnee can crow all he wants

It still breaks my heart that I had to find him a new home

I keep telling myself he will have a better life out there
