Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

Tam'ra of Rainbow Vortex :

Actually, I just got the metal bits to make feathered hair combs and hair pins in the mail TODAY!!! I admit, I am excited. I have been wanting to do this for the faire since I got chickens. So far, I have only made a few hair ornaments (for my friends' wedding I made hair combs for all 5 bridesmaids with scraps of the wedding dress, which we made, and tail feathers from my BLRW) and one feathered head dress, but I plan to do more. Many more. I ordered something like 100 combs and 60 hair pins and we bought beads and went through my feather boxes... but I ramble on.
I could give you tips if you'd like. Or if you want me to make something(s) for you, I could do that too. Any idea what colors you would want? My signature reflects the colors of feathers I have, plus some black and partridge. I have very little white, but you might not want white in your hair anyway, depending on your hair color.
I will post pics of combs as I get some done. It won't be for another week or more though because I HAVE to finish my chicken coop before I play. Either that, or my devious little chickies will come up with even more insidious plans of escaping their current enclosures.

So cool! I can't wait to see pics!

And I understand about finishing a chicken coop! I'm in the same boat.

My chickies are just getting too big to be inside! Quarters are getting cramp and fights have started.

Good luck, and I'll be waiting for pics. (I have feeling others will be excited also!)

Tam'ra of Rainbow Vortex :

I just thought you all would like to know that in my area, protective roosters are in high demand. Seriously. I posted my Blue Andalusian and could have given 6 of him away in just 3 days. I wrote up a description and posted pics. I said he was not to be eaten and of course I played up his good qualities. I just wanted to find him a good home, so I offered him for free. Someone picked him up today and now I have to go email everyone who didn't get him to say I am sorry someone else got him.
So if anyone has a rooster who needs rehoming, now's the time. I am actually going to refer my second choice to this forum to see if he can find a roo. He lost his roo 'Spiderman' recently and needs a good guardian for his free-ranging flock. He's hoping for one that is 1-2 years old and is not concerned about it challenging people or being slightly aggressive (he said his last roo earned his name by hiding under cars, then leaping out to attack feet passing by!) So if you know anyone with a roo they can't keep but like well enough to roar trip to the Rogue Valley, let me know!

Tam'ra everytime I read your name I think of the Oregon Vortex, I grew up in the Rogue Vallley I'm a Crater graduate. I can remember the Rogue River Rooster Crowing contests, do they still have them? wonderful place to live but too crowded for us now.
I am very interested in your feather hair pieces too. love your masks and even the chicken foot wands. I have been to several faires in Richland WA. loved every minute so did my daughter and grand daughters. I was the town librarian (just retired) and we had people living in town working on chain mail for a while, had them come and explain the faires to the kids in the summer reading programs ,they loved it also.

I'm so glad they found a good home. But I know how sad you must feel. Hope you feel better soon!

I know how you feel too. I've had to rehome so many beloved roosters. It breaks my heart each time but I keep in mind that they will have a nice life and I stay in touch with all the people who adopted them. That really helps a lot! I get photos and updates every few months.

Another rooster alert...

Hi all,

I have a roo in need of a home. He is a bantam WC Black Polish roo that my broody hatched this Spring. I bought the eggs from a breeder in WA who shows her birds. He is 6 weeks old and it would be nice for him to find a permanent home while he’s still young. I’m in Portland and cannot keep him. Mama pecked him a bit so he has a few purple feathers in his mohawk for now.

I’m asking $5.00 for him. Please PM me if you’re interested. Thanks!

Hi all,
How's things going for everybody? I'm wanting to know if anybody out there has had much experience with turkeys? I have a brand new (hatched Tuesday) Chocolate poult. I'm learning real fast they are a lot different than chickens! I got him/her at the same time as my ducks, but the ducks are a couple days older. I had to pull him/her out of the brooder and make him another brooder for just him/her, because the ducks were just walking all over the little thing! He/her loves the heat lamp! I went to the computer and did some research, and found out the turkeys like it somewhat warmer than chicks. I went in once to check on everyone, and he/she was laying flat oh their side! I thought he/she had died, but was ok. Found out that was normal also. I had to show him how to eat. I read that boiled egg yolk would get their attention (it works!) And that they need someone or something (like other turkeys or chicken, etc) to imprint to. So I take him/her out and cuddle. Seems to like it. Likes for you to 'talk' with him/her also. So I have been doing a lot of peeping! I also read somewhere about the 3 peeps. I didn't know what that was at first, but that is exactly how he/she peeps. Peep, peep, peep! In sets of three! Isn't that weird?
The ducks are just cool!
I do have a question. If anyone knows an answer, I would really appreciate it. I usually cook myself grits for breakfast (not everyday) but I usually have leftovers. Is this safe to feed to the chickens? (Jim is rolling his eyes again) I just thought is sounded like something they might like.
Any advice on the turkey would be nice also. (and no he/she isn't for any upcoming holiday!) He/she is my new baby!
Thanks,
