Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

*Taken from an email I received from another farmers marketer:
"The Poultry Processing Bill (HB 2872) is a bill that would allow small producers to raise and slaughter their own birds and sell those birds directly to their neighbors. This bill aligns Oregon State Statute with federal law and is critical for small poultry producers in Oregon."

Presently anyone who wants to legally sell the meat of their birds must have them processed in a USDA inspected facility. This is a huge hurdle for market farmers and small poultry operations since there are few facilities that offer qualified services locally and the best quote I've heard in the Willamette valley is $5.50/bird. The hauling and processing costs make it difficult if not impossible to sell your own poultry profitably at reasonable prices. There is a hearing at the capitol tomorrow on this bill and two others that are aimed at helping small farms.

There is a place that will process your birds near Portland called Harrington Poultry Processing. They were recommended to me by someone. I haven't used them yet but they did get the OK from a very chicken savvy friend. It's not cheap but it's an option until you learn how to do it yourself.

Oh my gosh Zoo! I hope you are able to take it easy soon and find some relax-time. Tell those kiddos that it's time to wait on Momma! Mother's Day needs to come early in your house this year!

P.S. Got to spend some time with Piper and Amelia this weekend and I have to agree with the others...those girls are very much into neck nuzzles and HAIR rearranging. Piper had me laughing so hard as she "cleaned" my hair and arranged it to her liking before hunkering down and purring into my neck. Too cute!

Thank you

Sadly, Mother's Day is just another day here. We have too much to get done so we'll be working in the garage building my rooster cages. My husband wants part of his garage back (imagine that?? lol) so we are putting in kennel style cages in the back room. With my daughter's graduation coming up, we are short on weekends. Hopefully I'll find some downtime this summer lol.

That makes me smile about Piper

I actually did relax a bit tonight with my Seramas. I have 3 new roosters, not to mention my 4, so they all got love time. My girls are not lovey, the boys are the ones that can't get enough cuddling. You'll have Seramas before you know it slurry....

Same here...just another day. I can't even sleep late because I don't trust them to take care of the chickens properly... change out waters, fill feeders and give the snacks. sad.

That's awesome! Processing is ridiculously expensive

Hope it goes through!

That's awesome, I had no idea they were there. For the price, it's worth it for me, because it takes me an hour per bird. If I take them a bunch at a time, the drive is worth it too!!

Thanks. I guess I will have to learn sooner or later. I'm going to visit my sister later this year, she does her own chickens. She could show me how. I have talked to her about it. She hasn't ever done ducks or geese yet, but she wants to learn. She doesn't pluck, she skins her chickens. I'm just not sure if I can do it or not?!!?!!

If you can stuff a turkey, you can do it. They can't feel a thing once they're dead. The actual life-ending part is where I am squeemish. My roomies, however, are grossed out by raw chicken from the store. *sigh* Some people can't do it, but like I said, if you can stuff a turkey, you're good.

Harrington's is in Boring, and they do a good job - we've used them. I took in about 20 meaties last year that we didn't want to do ourselves, and they charged $3 a bird (probably more this year). It was worth it to us!

Yeah but in reality, it is just a Hallmark holiday so I don't get too worked up about it. They pamper me on my birthday which means a lot more

I'm glad there's an option for those of us who don't know how, don't have enough birds to make it efficient or are not very fast. I keep saying I'm taking the soup birds who aren't laying anymore but then they'll trick me and lay an egg!
