Just do all your CL meetings in a well lit public place...

Nobody comes to my house and I don't go over to anybodys house off of CL... you just never know!

All meetings are done in a public place, never alone (ideally with male companion), during day light hours, and I NEVER go straight home after the meeting. Always go shopping first, or take a scenic freeway route to make sure I'm not being followed.

Of course... you can say we are paranoid, but better safe than sorry, especially with the things that happen with CL transactions back home in the greater Seattle area. A murder, a home invasion, robberies and set ups....

Corvallis and the places in OR I've been so far are such peaceful and "safe" places in comparison. And I'm sure, Seattle is safe and docile vs many other large cities. But of course... "low dollar" items like chickens shouldn't bring in the same type of crazies.

ETA: I've not gone as far yet as to buy a pre-paid phone, but have considered it!
 
Lots of broken eggs, missing eggs, been going on for weeks, in the main coop and in the hay pile, everywhere the girls like to lay.............

Now what to do????? They hop right through the auto chicken door into the coop!!!!! They can carry off the smaller, thicker shelled eggs, the thinner shelled ones just break.

Great idea, thank-you Cloverleaf!! The chickens free-range all day but I have some bird feeders I can hang where the chickens can't reach them and give that a try! I am also going to try to attach a piece of bird netting above the auto door to the coop that the chickens will have to push through to get in or out. They are so used to coming and going through that little door I think it will work. I already have bird netting all over the tractor/coop as the wild birds were flying right through the holes in the chicken wire!

I haven't had time to research anything yet but so far the rest of the flock looks good. Even the girl who was walking like a penguin is almost right again.

On a separate note - two of them really, I found out first hand that you cannot put two Serama roosters together - they will try and kill each other

Somehow, between my daughter and I putting the roosters in their cages last night upstairs, we put Othello and Romeo together. All seemed fine till this morning....that cage was rockin' LOL To answer the question everyone keeps asking me: you cannot keep two Serama roosters together!

Speaking of Seramas, I had someone contact me off my craigslist ad for Serama eggs looking for hens around 7-8 weeks old (a bit older or just younger is fine too). She rescued a Serama rooster outside of Wilco - he was in a box labeled "free" - can you imagine!!!!! - but now he is lonely and she wants to add to her flock. He has his own coop and yard and she will be adding more over the summer, she just needs a girl or two right now to keep him company. Anyone out there (newtochick?) with an extra girl or two, let me know! She seems like a very sincere person, but of course, I will check her out

Anyone want any appenz. Spitzhaubens? They are naughty and need big space. Th family who own them cant manage their wandering. These are backyard city birds.They look cool and are laying nicely.

Birds can be witty buggars.... Perhaps making a few fake not so tasty eggs might deter them? My indoor birds don't like bitter things or tacky things, and they are probably closer to wild jays than chickens are. Tiel spent a long time cleaning up after deciding to dive bomb my caramel dipping sauce.... hasn't tried to eat it since.

Are you sure they are not getting too fat? I've always heard that they can get fat build up around their reproductive tracts which can lead to increased pushing and eventual prolapse. I've surprisingly enough never had a single prolapse over probably 200 laying hens over the years, and my hens are rather "skinny" despite 24/7 feed due to fence free roaming of a cleared acre or two. However, note that 90% of my hens are replaced at the 3 year mark.....so age might also be an issue since yours are all pets. If they don't meet the table first, the untouchables are the ones who end up going due to internal laying.

Lol well this is true but they have not been getting scraps other than veggies for over a year now other than the occasional turkey or chicken carcass on the holidays. The strange thing is all these birds were young, less than 3 years old and all the same breed.
