Oregon Summer Poultry Swap, Redmond, June 18th

I spoke to an acquaintance who does bead work. She says she has a hand beaded chandelier to bring to the swap.

I hired a guy to make some treadle feeders. I hope to have those ready for the swap.

I know someone who makes hand made candies and chocolates. If I talk her into coming to the swap, would any one buy?

Ooh I might get some candies and chocolates

I need to do an updated have/want list.

Also, a couple that builds really nice looking coops (for I thought very reasonable prices) contacted me about coming to the swap - they make moveable coops/tractors and larger ones as well.

Will be taking in the application tomorrow with the fee and get our public use permit. I've been waiting for a call back from the city but they haven't yet, so I'm just taking it in the way it is so we aren't submitting it the friday before the swap! argh!

Oh, and we should have several blue and a few black Americauna chicks for sale - most will be fully feathered and ready to be outside. These are not breeder quality, we have had some beak issues from this breeding pen and have since broken it up, but they should make very sweet pets and be good egg layers.

I made jam today, so I'll be bringing half-pints of orange marmalade, raspberry-orange marmalade and boysenberry-orange marmalade. I tasted them all as I was cleaning up the bowls and spoons afterwards, and they're delish!

Holler if you want to reserve any. They'll be $3 each.

I'll take one of each marmalade! I love marmalade

I bought some at the last meet and it was good but not quite what I expected since I used to make marmalade all the time from lemon and lime as well as oranges when I lived in southern CA.

Great!

Yes, I understand - one of the reasons I started to make orange marmalade was that the store version was changing to something mostly sugar-tasting. I have made lime marmalade, and I made one 4-citrus (includes grapefruit) marmalade that is so tart I use it for Indian recipes and things other than toast!

I'm enjoying trying these older recipes (I have an old book on canning, but I use the timeframes of the newer guidelines). Amazing what the past generations got to enjoy that we never knew about!

Yes, you did; sorry I didn't get back to you - I've been running between the raindrops to get some gardening done! Sooo many plants will be late this year!!

BTW, if anyone wants some comfrey plants, I can probably dig up one or two small ones - chickens love to eat them, and they are good fertilizer (I make salve with mine)... tell me ahead of time. Cost -$2 for a 4" pot. But know that once they start in the yard, they are likely to keep coming back!

As I was walking into Big R today, it occurred to me that it might be good to put up some posters. Naturally, I didn't think of it until after I was already there.

I suspect that not many people see their (Big R's) bulletin board but some of the feed stores have bulletin boards and Bend Pet Express has a big bulletin board right by the door.

I think it would be a great idea to put up flyers (posters would be more expensive) in the feed stores. High Desert Ranch & Home is very 'poultry-oriented' but also Round Butte Seed, Country Feed and Pet, Celebrate the Season, obviously Big R too but flyers in the smaller stores probably would be more visible. I'm sure HDRH would promote it if they know about it. What about feed stores in Madras, Redmond, LaPine? I'm not up on all that, but I just had over 200 people come through my yard during the chicken coop tour, so I know there are a lot of people out in the sagebrush who would be very interested in the swap. Will you be doing PSA's on the radio stations? Also you might let the OSU Extension know about it, I bet they get calls about chickens, especially. And keep the ad on craigslist! Then, depending on your energy level, there are the Fred Meyers, Safeways, church bulletin boards ......... i wonder if you could get some flyers out at some of the farmers' markets that are starting up right now. Redmond GH has one, there are 3 in Bend, is there on in Madras?

Has anyone made a flyer? I'd put one up in the Sweet Home and Brownsville feed stores...
