What do you mean by a sound proof chamber? I am also very interested in adding a rooster to my flock. I also live in the city & want to keep my neighbors happy. We live 20 minutes west of Portland.
Also, how do you pick what breed of rooster to get? Obviously we'd want a quieter, docile breed of rooster for our 1 BO and 2 SLW.
Ok so heres what i plan to do: I have 2 different 3x3x3 Pens that i used to use for my Coturnix Quail. They are open air, but i am going to alter the entire structure. I am going to cover the sides with light wood, then insulate the entire box (except the front, ill get to that later) with Styrofoam insulation (about 3 1/2in to 4 inches worth!!!) and then add another thin piece of plywood to the outside. The Top will have vent holes for air circulation, as well as a small lamp fixture to provide some light at **appropriate** hours. Then i will build another removable sound proof front door (with an air intake) to slide over the front after i put him inside. I also have a large 6x6x3ft pen that i used to use for my chickens in the summer months (no roof, and open air.) I will be converting this to a larger area for my rooster to play in (probably throw some hens in there daily for him too everyday to ensure fertility).
His life will be the following: Everyday night he will live in his isolation booth (of which i control the light source and will hopefully limit his calls) with probably one hen with him. After i wake up and take care of the rest of the morning chores, from 8 or 9-12pm he will be in his bigger area (still inside the garage with a few ladies), and then at noon-1pm everyday he will get to come out and free range with all his ladies in the yard until dark. From 12pm-Dusk i think my neighbors would truly be hard pressed to complain about him. I think the crows around here make more noise than even I-5 (which is only 3 blocks away). I also plan on bribing my neighbors with eggs in the summer, and just try and be as respectful of their noise privacy as i can. I am currently bribing them with holiday gift baskets of homemade cookies, seeing as i have 15-18 full size hens free ranging in my yard all day..
As far as a pick of rooster, i have no idea. I only got one, because i want to set my own eggs, and start developing my own line of my favorite chicken, the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. I have a rooster on the way, 1 fullsize splash hen, and 3 pullets (coming from California) the week of the 27th. I also have 24 BLRW eggs set in my incubator, 24 others en route, and have an order of 15 day old chicks (straight run) from PAUL'S POULTRY (arguably the best BLRW line in the U.S.) coming in late January. So i have alot of stock to chose from, and i plan on keeping 2 roosters, and about 20 hens.. Its gonna be a long process, but i think the results are going to be great.. Anyways heres my rooster, i cant wait to meet him (in about 10 days.)
