does anyone know why a hen would wander around *inside* a coop loudly clucking/chattering/multiple cluckings in a row? My bantam partridge leghorn has been doing it off and on sometimes mornings sometimes evenings.

We've looked around and there doesn't seem to be any predators or anything hanging about...only thing is the wyandotte is in the nest looking like she's about to lay. Doesn't sound too peaceful with the leghorn pacing about.

Any insights?

Ps: I'm an illegal Salem hen holder.

ps2: There is a possibility that we might extend an open offer for a trade: Our leghorn hen for a quieter gal. It might be possible the leghorn might do well free range style on land.

is it possible that she is about to lay? waiting for THAT nest box? We call it "the egg song" all mine do it when they lay an egg, and some of them even do it when the others lay...its a chior of loud chickens singing about laying eggs. and oh yesss they get loud!

ahhh, I knew about the egg announcement song but I wasn't sure there were supporting acts

Strangest thing ever!

I had Silver laced Wyandottes (3) up in Milwaukie and they were the quietest batch of hens! This is my first experience with singers.

Some of our hens do the chicken song before, during AND after laying. If I hear a loud and persistant squawking coming from the run, I can be certain I will go out and find a nice warm egg in the nesting box. My son calls it "egg announcement", too.

He thinks its the hens demanding that we admirine and appreciate. And bring treats.

edited for spelling.

(I'm pretty sure poor spelling is a sign of genius)

It was the leghorn wanting the nest box and the wyandotte being all broody. I went out and there was a leghorn egg UNDER the Wyandotte.

She's gone and plucked her under feathers out---- gonna have to stop that if it goes too far. I put her outside the coop to run around hope it helps....

Please feel free to delete the posts I think I've gone a bit off topic a little?

Did anyone go to the Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel? I went today. They had some pretty cool chicken hats and, one of the dances they were doing was the CHICKEN DANCE!
