Oregon

Checking in from Southern Oregon, specifically a small town called Eagle Point which is outside of Medford.

Our fair cut the number of birds each 4-H kid could bring to 12 to reduce the premiums paid out.

But state attendance was up again. There were about 40 int. and 17 seniors this year.

Please forgive all the typos, xtill trying to figure out the new tablet and it won't read my fingernails - I found the numbers finally.

This is 2hot2chicken..... I got locked out of my old act.....Long story but don't have the password and sites not sending me reset emails.
I already sent a message to mods so I setup this act to wait for their reply.

Anyway, I have some silkies for sale if anyone is interested. They are from our BV, BB winning flocks
Right now I have:
5-6 Buff silkies 3-4 weeks old and looking very promising for SQ! They have All the right stuff!

I also may have some older pullets and cockerals in other colors for sale including some super lavender birds!
If anyone is interested let me know : )
I have more chicks due to hatch next week from my buff and paint pens, I set some to test fertility and it was 99% which I wasn't expecting so now I need to make some room.... : )
Don't forget I want your buff silkie if he turns out to be a rooster. Also ordering some eggs from wynette for some Jersey's I have decided to cull my flock to only Jersey's and Silkies :) So let me know if you have any Jerseys or if you want any Jerseys lol.

I can count on one hand the number of Silkies that I've had that were actually strong birds that didn't need a bunch of babying...

I had dozens that required no babying... ugly, near crestless, mottled colored birds who ran with the production birds.. but I don't know if you could get any further from standard to even call them silkies. LOL. They were fury and sold as "black meat chickens" just as well as they would have if they conformed to a standard. haha. Sorry couldn't help it. I have found the "show" type silkies are really feather brained and kind of just stand there... so fragile!

On the point about county fairs needing people to show, it was pretty sad at the evergreen state fair this year. I think I saw the open class half of the show? I went near the end and I only saw about 6 different exhibitors names. One exhibitor made up over half the birds... and they were mixes, production type hatchery birds, missing feathers, not really in any show condition, and one even had a massive ear infection you could easily see. I'd almost venture to guess that they didn't have enough birds so someone literally packed up and showed their entire yard bird flock. There was a stark contrast between that exhibitors stock and the few exhibitors who showed actual show birds in good condition and of one or two varieties.

I can see how it's important to fill spots at the fair, but also see how people who are "serious" about it may hesitate to bring their birds to a place where less than ideal birds are housed just a cage or two away. I'm in no place to complain because I have never participated myself, but am considering getting more involved once I have graduated.

Oh that's awesome! I love those birds I hatched from Wynette! I don't show... but DANG they are HUGE compared to my production flock.

Would love to see pics of your future paints! Would like a small bold girl with good type. The girls I got from you are doing great, calming down from the move and enjoying watermelon and corn on the cob today. They're starting to figure out I'm the treat lady.

.
I love them, Thank you.

Suzie-- Glad you are enjoying them : ) The porcelain especially has been handled so much by my kids I don't think it will take em long before they are following you around and jumping on your lap for attention and treats! I will let you know how the hatch goes. Here is a suggestion for you though with paints. You always want to breed the best paint offspring and to breed good type into your birds as well as heavier spotting you want to cross your paint cockeral to "true" black or white hens. I say true black because so many people confuse blue for black. I am crossing my paint boy (he is a little on the larger size and not as well crested as I like) to my petite black and white girls who are very heavily crested to offset his smaller crest and larger size. Its a work in progress and I am very excited to see the results from this breeding. There is a paint pullet with him to (broody right now) but she will be seperated into a pen with other paint girls and a black cockeral I have soon. My black cockeral is a result of a paint to black breeding and should carry the paint gene so I can't wait to see what that will produce either....

Is the dark hen i got from you a true black? Looks like her fluff underneath is lighter and I thought that's how you tell it's a dark blue? Thanks for the tips, still trying to decide if I want to keep all three Roo's and if not who to part with. Hard to choose.
