Oregon

I think there is a track the wolf for the Oregon/Washington/Idaho wolf packs. They have trackers on the alpha males. One of the wolves traveled all through eastern Oregon last summer and all the way into northern Cali and then back to Idaho. So there are wolves in Oregon, just mainly extreme eastern Oregon. But they are trying to repopulate Oregon wolves.
Ihave seen info that WDFW recently relaesed several in the Mt. Saint Helens area.

I know there is that Wolf Sacturary in Olympia and they try and rehab wolves, they may have released some? I personally love wolves, so majestic. On the other hand despise coyotes, I guess it is the scavanging I don't like.

Do any of you know a place in the Portland area (willing to drive within reason) that still has chickens available? Preferably in the 8-16 weeks-ish? We found my 5 year olds chick laying out in the field today, she didn't survive whatever got ahold of her and he's so heartbroken :( Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

The Damascus Farm and Garden feed store tends to always have pullets and laying hens, but not of high quality. I would honestly check Wilco, they tend to have chicks late in the year. A friend of mine just bought some.

[[[[.......I have seen wolves in central oregon that are the same size......]]]]]

No wolves in Central Oregon.  We have some gigantic coyotes, but the nearest wolf pack has only made it as far as the Oregon Idaho border.   I'm sure they will get here eventually, but they aren't here, yet.

There are 2 cougars (at least two) who live right inside the city limits of Bend.  There are frequent sitings of them.  I've got at least one cougar who lives about a mile from me in CRR.  None of those cougars has caused even the tiniest bit of trouble, other than getting people worked up and getting their photos on the local news.

The local coyotes are not  a problem for me.  I fence them away from my poultry and dogs and off they go to control the local cottontails and take care of abandoned dogs and cats who are dumped in the country.  All and all, they are useful to have around.

I didn't realize you are in CRR, I am as well, way out on the northern end. We have at least one cougar out here, I've seen tracks when I was out walking, one set of them just outside my fence. I haven't heard any of the neighbor mention livestock loss, but I have friends on the west side who's neighbor a few doors down lost a goat to a cougar. Wish "ours" would do something about the coyote that keeps digging under my perimeter fence so I could start free ranging again. Thought it might be a loose dog but my next door neighbors saw it trotting off one day with one of my hens.

What breed are you looking for? The Wilcos only had chicks for September so any of those would be a maximum of 6 weeks old now, and they cleared their inventory. But there are usually random birds on Craig's List (I know because Nelson is always telling me how much I'd like some). There is also a poultry show this Saturday in Salem ...

We aren't specific on breed, we have a variety. Out of the dozen we had my son and daughter each got to choose one to be their chick, they each put their hand in the brooder at our feed store to find the friendliest chicks. My son had a Sicilian Buttercup (she wasn't going to be a very good layer but she sure was a super friendly little girl) and my daughter ended up with a non-frizzling Red Frizzle Cochin bantam roo LOL! Buttercup was my son's baby, he went out every day just to say hi and make sure she was happy! He went out yesterday to check on her and came back in to tell me he couldn't find her, I went out with him and found a pile of feathers along with part of her :( It's never fun losing a chicken but this is our first we've lost like this and it's so heartbreaking that it had to be his :(
We have 11 now that range in age from 7ish weeks to 15 weeks so I really just want to find a girl that would be easy to transition into our flock. We seriously just finished transitioning our babies in within the last week and a half :( Really though I'd do anything even if it meant getting a baby and starting over with the transition just for him to be happy! I'll check Craigslist and might even drive to Salem, Thank you! And sorry for the novel ;)

Thank You! I will look them up and give them a call too! My husband just left for Florence for the weekend so I could have him stop on his way home, although I wasn't gonna tell him until after we got her LOL! It wouldn't be the first time I've done that, last time I did it he ended up having to build another coop hahaha! He'll be more understanding about this though, our little guy is so heartbroken :( Thank you so much for the response!
