All this talk about breeds got me intrigued. One of our chicks we got as a "mystery" chick LOL. My youngest wanted a "yellow" chick and picked her, he named her Applesauce:) Anyone have any ideas on her breed? She is beautiful, and while she was my panicky "freak" chick, she has grown now, at about 10 weeks, into a very calm, confident girl. She has those fluffy cheeks and featherd feet and legs. She looks like her breed is bigger than our Barred Rock and RIR. I attached some pics below and included a couple others of Cinderella and Cecilia just for fun :)

She's a salmon Faverolle, just darker than the standard, pretty common for hatchery girls. :D You'll love her!! They are AWESOME!

What breed lays red eggs?
None lay "red" eggs...but there are some breeds that lay a very dark brown egg, and some of those have almost a terra cotta look to them, I would say that Welsummers have a redder hue to them than others, then Penedesencas, then Marans, the Marans seem to be the most chocolatey of the three. Though, to get good egg color, you will want to find them from private breeders that breed for egg color, you won't get as good of egg color from hatchery stock.

Oh thank you so much! You nailed it, I just googled it and that is definitely what she is. We do love her already :) Thanks again!!

So it's 11pm and I am out hiding easter eggs. I am about to close the door and I hear our rooster crow. Is this normal or is he just a freek crowing at 11pm? I don't mind if he is a freek. They are locked in the hen house so it isn't too loud and the neighbors shouldn't complain, but I may have an issue!

So one of my new chicks keep pasting up. Her bottom looks really irritated since I keep having to clean her. I'm not feeding medicated starter. Should I be kicking myself for that? Any suggestions to clear it up or help her out?
