Welcome from yer neighbor on the other side of the BIG creek. Hey FYI there is a POULTRY show at the Clark County fairgrounds this Saturday That would be a real good chance to look at lots of breeds and meet some BYCers. I will be there with my metal art. Feel free to stop and say HI.
Next Saturday April 27 there is a swap in Canby at the Clackamas Co fairgrounds. The swap is put on by a group of poultry peeps and is mostly poultry but there will be other things too.
I hope to see ya at one or both of these events.

Hi Rob, thanks for the welcome! I have an event in Corvallis for my other hobby (miniature model horses) this Saturday, but I've got the Canby event on my calendar for the 27th! It's going to be *very* hard to attend without bringing home any chicks, but we're just not set up for them yet, and I'm determined to not half-*** it. (Can I say ***? Not sure what the rules are in terms of language here!). Depending on where we end up, we will likely get a pair of goats as well, so I've been doing some reading about which goat breeds will be relatively easy keepers in addition to flock guardians.

You guys have an amazing informative site here, I spent 3 hours yesterday reading the DIY thread!

ETA - I see that my three letter word for butt that starts with an A has been asterisked! There's my answer!

And sorry to hear about you're not going to the show. I know there are only two shows in our area and I would hat bad timing to cause me to miss my very first one!

I'm going to tonight, I had originally planned for Thursday before the show, but... We are also going to go pick up Frontline flea and tick paste, I guess you'd say, to put on them. I hear that stuff works wonders. In my 3 years of raising chickens I've never had to deal with mites. I knew it would happen eventually, but the timing just sucks.

The only reason I didn't wash them last night was because it was about 8:15 at night. I'm very lucky I had Sevin on hand, but I'm going to wash them tonight with flea/tick shampoo, Frontline, then dust again. I'm also going to move them I think and do my best to bleach out their pen. On Friday, if I find any live mites on him, I'm not going to show him. If I don't find any live ones I will show him. Is there something to get off shell casings, just in case? I want to pick up everything I need tonight.

A flea comb does a good job removing the egg casings from mites and lice.

So this is my list for the store:
Frontline Flea & Tick paste
A spray bottle (don't have one).
A flea comb to remove shell casings

Here's my plan for tonight:
Wash both birds with flea and tick shampoo in the sink in the laundry room so mites will immeadiately go down the drain. Then wait a little for them to try and put the flea and tick paste on them. Then, wait until they are completely dry and dust them again with Sevin. While they are drying, I plan to spray down the coop with Sevin spray. On Friday I'm going to check again for any live mites and go from there for the show.

Yes the filters are pretty tight. See this is a family oriented kid friendly site. When you get to Canby we can enable ya. Then once ya have chicks ya will have to build.

Re: Goats - we want them for fun and flock protection, as family pets. Friendly is a must since we have kids, and not super big. Do Pygmy goats do well with birds?
