The one I used was a 55 gal tank, and it was appropriate for 6 chicks for 5 weeks...beyond that, it is a bit dodgy. Have a good plan BEFORE you begin your brood, for what you will do, after.

I love my geese. They are gorgeous to look at and so dignified. They are also at least slightly more predator-proof than smaller birds.

I got my first turkeys this year and I am totally smitten. They follow me around like puppies and make lovely noises.

I wore a sweatshirt that they hadn't seen before. The shirt has a picture of branches and leaves on it. My turks stared and stared and then one reached out and tried to pluck one of the leaves off of my shirt.

Today, I took one of the dogs into the orchard. The turks have never seen him up close before and one of them came and stood behind me, staring around my leg at the dog, all worried and puffed up, but certain I would protect her. They are so trusting, it is impossible to resist them.

I do on occasion shop at Wilco or Coastal.....but I try really hard to shop at my local family run feed store. I know if don't they will soon disappear. I haven't paid attention to their sign to see if they are doing fall chicks though.

I buy all my feed and litter from the local feed store. It is a family run "Mom and Pop", and while it costs a little more, they are like part of the family.
They are not a good source for our chicks, tho. They order only in lots of 25 and the hatchery they use does not sex the breed I keep. Last year I ordered 8 and got 5 roos

. The birds were also smaller than the ones I got the year before from a feed store in a town about an hour north of me, in Tillamook (I didn't know about Wilco in McMinnville, then) so I have had to resort to getting my chicks from these other sources.
And, of course, hatching my own!

Haha, no worries!!! Yes, I was referring to the non-chicken poultry but it's nice to hear input on chicken breeds! I have several different breeds and just recently aquired Silkies (SO EXCITED). I find myself thinking open-mindedly about other types of poultry since I have found chickens so intriguing!

I would like to raise some pheasnats but have no expectations that they will be as nice and friendly as my chickens. I have gotten great information about them here on the pheasant thread!!!!

You will love them. These ladies i named Farrah Faucett and Marilyn Monroe after the two gorgeous bombshells, lol. I hope they will someday produce some lil' Pamela Sue Anderson's and Charlize Theron's, hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

How interesting that turkeys are so personable!! I just wonder about other poultry since chickens have surprised me so much with how endearing they are!

I tried raising pheasants 2 years ago...tried...they drove me INSANE...short trip, some might say. LOL I started out with 31 babies, and when they hit about 3 weeks of age, they went on a killing spree and I came home from work to 11 left alive. They stopped endearing themselves to me when they hit about 3 days old. Bigger freaks, I have never seen.

I did about the same thing. The roosters will kill one another and they are escape artists so do your research and make sure you have adequate room for them. I do love to look at them they are beautiful, and with the right set up could be quite fun, but they did not work for me.
