Lost a hen to a huge coyote this morning. Anybody out Otis way, and Highland Estates area, specifically, be warned...there are monsters afoot, and they attack in broad daylight.
He was really big. I was lucky it was just the one.
No more free-ranging for this lot...(now, to convince the 6 week-olds who still fit thru the pen wire this is a smart idea...)

Does anyone know how to get rid on mites???
Last weekend THREE birds died in 2 days!!!!
It was my very fave turkey named Tango, My favrite bantam named Fanta, and my baby chick named Moon who was a coockoo maran which I really wanted a coockoo maran!!!

Ok, so in some crazy twist of fate, my one hen, who I was sure was gone for good, came walking back home tonight, in time for bed. She has a nasty wound on her hind end (he tried to get a bite out of her, but only wounded her, instead) but I think some rest and liberal applications of neosporin might just see her through.
Pretty excited she is back!
Sorry to hear about your loss of friends. It is so very sad when that happens.

A few years ago, I was driving into the parking lot- of where I used to work- and saw a Coyote. Was just standing there, in the company drive- bold as brass and not moving away from my car approaching it.

It was the biggest Coyote I had ever seen in my life. If not for the color and head, I would have sworn it was a wolf because it was the same size.

That boy was NOT afraid of me and only meandered off after I honked my horn. When it was off the road it stopped and gave me this 'look', over it's shoulder. I would NOT have wanted to be on foot and run across that thing!!

Have a look through the "Road less traveled" thread. It chronicles an amazing story of returning a "lost" flock to health. I believe the author treats various infestations with nothing more complicated or sinister than wood ash ... that's ash from a wood fire. I've read also about DE (a kind of very fine food-grade clay) available at feed stores by the dust bath stuff is also a useful thing.

Fortunately, my invader was as scared of me as I probably should have been of him (tho I wasn't. I ran out into the yard like a maniac "You give me my chicken back!!!" )
And I'll be Billy BeJiggered if he didn't!
Next time I will be showing a bit more discretion than to run out there, unarmed, after him.

Haven't had any issues I use DE and Sevin dust in my coops in with the bedding.

I had never seen one that big before. Really scary!

We had a pack of 6-8 coyotes IN our yard last night! Luckily everyone was locked up tight. One of them was right outside my dog's kennel challenge howling at them. That's what woke up my DH...

Be carefull with them coyotes... I lost a wonderful SLW to one last year. I lost another (Jersey Giant pullet) to an owl. So be careful, and whatever you do, do not forget to lock up the coop at night and have an enclosed run for them in the day when your not home!
