I am interested in keeping my chicks on organic feed. What are the pros and cons to this? Are they really healthier with antibiotics in their feed?
Thanks!!
(I really am becoming addicted to this forum...)

I have always fed organic feed to my birds. I just figured if I wanted conventional eggs, I could buy them- be a lot easier and cheaper! If I am raising my own food- I want it to be the healthiest, tastiest choice. No reason to medicate an animal that is not sick...The cons are that is may be hard to find (I have to have mine special ordered) and it is twice as expensive...Enjoy your chickens!

I struggle a bit with the price of organic food so I free range, supplement with table scraps and crushed oysters, and save the organic feed for the winter. I'll put some in their feeders in the coop at night to keep them from picking each other but I don't feed it free-choice. Ideally, I'd like to produce all of the feed for my animals. It's big time investment though.

What do some of the rest of you do?

I feed my chicks organic feed from Countryside Natural. It is more expensive, and I have to either drive 3 hours each way to get it or I have to pay to have it shipped, but I still prefer the organic.

I plan to experiment with growing different crops to see how much of the feed I can produce myself. Since this is my first year with chickens, I figured I would start out slowly, so I have planted sunflowers, quinoa, millet and sesame.

Has anyone had success growing some/all of their chickens feed?

Cheers!

I don't know where in VA you live, but they do deliver once a month to several different areas. I live in Yorktown and will be picking up my first bag and some DE next week in Cologne. They charge $6 to deliver, just an idea.

If you are buying commercial feed they DO NOT have antibiotics in it. Antibiotics in the feed was outlawed years ago.
I asked the price of the organic feed at my local feed store and decided it wasn't worth the price. I don't eat eggs every day of the week so I am not concerned with organic. I think some people get carried away with the organic thing. No offense intended but if you are raising your own chickens I think you have done the best thing possible in regards to controling your families safety regarding eggs. Unless you are eating organic foods yourself I think you are wasting your money on organic chicken food.

I live just across the York River from Yorktown, but I work during the week and the delivery schedule on their website shows deliveries only during the work week. You will love their food....well actually your chickens will love their food, and if you have a dog, don't let him/her near the food or it will be gone in a flash! My dog loves the chicken food! Go figure.
