We are planning to raise our chicks/chicken organically. Does anyone have any ideas where to buy organic starter feed mail order or near Chicago Illinois.

We ordered our chicks from Mcmurray and they offer starter chick feed for 40.00 and $10 for shipping.

It also says that it good for 0-3 weeks. Then offers a grower feed for 3-5 week olds. Is anyone is knowledgeable about all these different feeds? I would appreciate some feed back, pun intended.

Is it necessary to feed them starter then grower then finisher?

Thanks Sheila

just contact all local feed stores around you if they dont keep it in stock some one will order it for you, I did because to have it shipped is way to expencive. Since it is a 45 minute drive for me I always buy several 50lb bags at a time

If you go to www.localharvest.org that site lists farmers all over the country searchable by state and regions within states. The listings tell what the farmers sell. I was just able to find a farmer in my state (MI) who actually delivers organic chicken feed to my town once a month. I hope you can find someone close to you so you don't have to pay shipping. Good luck!

I just kept asking around at the local feed stores. Most can order it, you just have to ask. It took about 2 weeks at my closest one. I had to wait until they got another shipment of their regular feeds delivered. The price varies around here from $25.00-$30.00/ for 50#s.
