I know this will rise the roof, but I want to set the records straight.
Is true organic feeds better? Probably. Are you getting the true organic feed you are paying for? Probably not.
Here I will make my case for this statement. I can only say this for the state of Califonia. There are 2 forms of organic in this state, 1 registered, 2 certified.
MOST OF THE FEED IS FROM REGISTERED GROWERS. What does that mean? Just this, the farmer states to some government agency that he is growing organically. His farm is NEVER tested nor is his products. That is a fact in California.
A certified grower is just that. He has to PROVE HE HAS NOT USED ANY CHEMICALS FOR 3 YEARS. His farm is tested once in awhile after that. And here in California a farmer can state only a portion of his land is organic.
What does that mean? Just this, he can use all the chemicals he want on a portion of his land and hope he doesn't get any over spray. But still if he has stated he is growing organically on his farm, he can sell ALL his produce as organic.
Legal? YES. Ethical? NO.
So is the price you pay for organic feed still cost affective? I know it makes many feel better, trying to do the best for their animals and family. But it is only good if you are getting what you pay for.
Now what state produces the largest amount of produce in the country? California.
Anyone that wants to verify these statements can do so, by checking out a radio program called Farmer Freds. The show today was on this very subject and can be brought up on the internet. Or they can check out all the rules on organic growing on the states site.
