Organic/Natural repellent

Quote:
When I've used eucalyptus oil, it had a very short effective range. The mosquitoes would hover but not land. So I don't think treating the area alone would work.

Tea tree oil might kill parasites hanging out on the roosts by contact. I doubt it has much effect on flying insects.

Candles and fire work by producing CO2. The mosquitoes find their prey by following the CO2 released by breathing. Extra CO2 from the fire confuses them. Citronella candles are no more effective than regular candles.

I sray it on myself, the coop, the horses, dogs, etc. I don't think it will harm the bird unless you really soak them with the repellent. They should be fine, besides, its organic.

This repellent can not harm birds what so ever. It would harm them if you did not add water to the repellent. If you were to spray your birds with pure Tea Tree Oil, then that would not be good for your birds. When you are spraying your animals, use a spray bottle that sprays mist. If you are going to spray other materials, I recament you use a bottle that squirts a line of water. If you are planning to spray both your animals and materials, get a bottle that has nosel that allows you to chang from "squirt" and "spray."

Thats why I said to add water to the solution.

Just reread this thread from last month. To luvmychicknkids...bugs do not ingest DE. All they have to do is come in contact with it and it cuts them and dehydrates them and kills them. That notwithstanding, I dont know if it works on skeeters but it might. Anybody out there with skeeter knowledge and DE???

I think that mosquitos go for the bare skin more and the DE is not likely to stay on long enough to keep the mosquito off. I do dust my birds with it and anything trying to make a home in the feathers dies and falls off, but the feathers hold the dust for a lot longer than bare skin. I do know that a breeze and smoke will keep the mosquitos at bay, have to be creative and careful if using those with your chickens

esp. if combined LOL

....besides, its organic.

It is a grave mistake to equate "organic" with "safe"... some of the most toxic substances on earth are "organic"

* Tea tree oil is neat stuff, but VERY TOXIC TO CATS!!! So, be really careful with it around them. Seems many tree oils are bad for cats-- pine oil (which I love to clean with!) is another very toxic to cats. . .

Yes, "Tea Tree Oil" can be toxic if it is pure. But in this solution, It says to add water. The water will tone it down. It is only about 10-15 drops of the Oil that you are adding. The Tea Tree Oil will also kill the lice and mites that are on your chickens.

NOTE: This repellnt can hurt your chickens if you spray it on thier face.
