Organic, really??

There should be another organization that tests for 100% organic produce. USDA is becoming to govermentish.

Isn't that the truth!

As for the info, *sigh* it's rather irritating isn't it? All the better reason for me to do more DIY, grow my garden and send processed foods to the curb.

I have a friend who is trying to eat organic. I warned her she needs to check in to what "organic" means when purchasing grocery store items, because if you ask me, it is NOT organic.

When I think "organic," I don't think "store." I think roadside stands, family farms and farmers' markets. I know not everything from a local source qualifies as organic, but I feel that things bought locally are probably safer. Is this true?

I think so!!! I prefer to know where the produce comes from. We have a FANTASTIC farmers market every Thursday here and they are all local growers. Alot of people have homemade beef jerky, jams, breads, etc. I LOVE it!

I think so too. I put the info. out there mainly for folks forced to buy "organic" at the store. Our situation is that we have plenty of land - 80 acres - but every bit of it is leased to a neighbor right now for cattle. Even if it wasn't, there would need to be some changes made so I could garden and right now neither DH or I are in any condition to garden. The only grocery store we have within a 50 mile range right now is walmart. There is supposed to be a true grocery store opening in town in the next month or so. The closest farmers market is about 65 miles away. I would like to do better than we are, but right now that's next to impossible.

Actually those facts are not entierly true it is VERY hard to get certified and the testing does require soil samples and what not. I agree that companies like Kraft and others are probably cutting a lot of corners with their "organic" line but if you do your research and actually buy from smaller companies you can bet that 99% of it is true and those products are indeed organic.

This whole topic is making me so sad as what is it going to take to wake people up? why is it so hard to believe that the food we eat is filled with garbage? its like trying to explain to people that there are no death squads/boards in the new health care system its like peoples minds are made up and dont confuse them with FACTS.

Probably next to nothing is truely organic at a farmers market....just fresher.

You're right! I look for fresh, not organic. Besides, I can't eat tomatoes from the store - they have removed all flavor.
