noun

  1. The branch of zoology that deals with birds.
I’ve recently started taking a more scientific approach to my interest in birds. Alongside that, I am also birding much more as I no longer have a flock of my own. Has anyone else expanded their interest in birds beyond poultry, including a scientific or research-based approach? I am currently taking Ornithology: Comprehensive Bird Biology from Cornell Lab Online. It’s an online textbook-based course and I have found it quite interesting so far.

Feel free to chat & share papers, interesting videos, or birds you see. I’ll be documenting birding trips and anything else that comes to mind.

This sounds fascinating! I don’t really have anything to contribute to the science side of it myself but I love birds, all birds, and would love to follow along if that’s okay.

I use the apps eBird and Merlin Bird ID (both by Cornell Lab) for casual birding when I'm out and about, around the property or on a walk. Merlin has a Sound ID option which is handy and fun. Sometimes I let it record for 15, 20 minutes at a time to see what I get. It's not 100% accurate but it's close! Found out there's a lot more around here than I ever thought!

Please do! You’re more than welcome.
I've become more interested in birding recently as well. I've been using the Cornell Lab apps (Merlin and eBird) to keep a record of the birds I've found. I'm subscribed to some of their newsletters and they put out some pretty interesting reads.
Welcome and I agree! I like their video content too.

I use Birda but I’ve used Merlin and eBird in the past. They’re pretty good apps.

Thanks!!! And I might try those apps. I know someone that uses Merlin and the sound ID on it. Although I feel like we just have basic birds here hahah

No such thing as a basic bird! Some of my favourite birds are also the most common. Blue jays hold a special place in my heart, or here, even the feral pigeons on every roof.

Does crookedly hung wall art count to qualify me as a bird nerd?

That’s a good point!!! Cardinals and chickadees are some of my favorites. And the birds of prey. We have a lot of ospreys here and some bald eagles. I love seeing the eagles because when I was little there used to be no eagles around and they’ve made a huge comeback. :love same with the great white sharks here but we’re talking about birds not sharks LOL but I just love seeing nature make a comeback is all :love and I love seeing the cardinals because they’re gorgeous and it also reminds me of my family that has passed away since they all loved nature too. So yeah.
