After we move, I plan to hatch our own flock of Buff Orphington hens. I'm not totally in love with the plain look of the roos though... so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to which breed of roo to get? I'd like him to be very pretty and people friendly. And what would their crossed babies look like, since I'd probably hatch some of those too.

Please, feel free to post pictures if you have any

Thanks so much.

I heard the Silver Phoenix is very pretty to look at and is very friendly to everyone. So i suggest the silver phoenix!

good luck picking!

I suppose that beauty is in the eye of the beholder because I don't know that I have ever seen an ugly buff orpington. lol
I have raised them for many years. Would you consider another color orp? There are a number of colors to choose from if buff is not to your liking, i.e. white, black, blue, and splash. I have all of the colors and I still like my buffs.

Oh no, I think they're wonderful birds... just the buff roos I've seem look 'plain' to me. I feel like a roo should be flashy. LOL

Would you happen to have pix of the different colors you listed? I can't say I've ever seen a roo that wasn't buff!

Where would I acquire one by chance? I'd like to get one in egg form, not chick, but the chances of sexing an egg are... well. I wouldn't want to eat any extra blue roos LOL As long as they aren't fighting, how many roos would be safe to keep together?

Well, if you get a dozen Blue Orpington eggs, you can almost be guaranteed a rooster in there somewhere, LOL. The thing is he could also be splash or black if the parents were both blue, like my boy and his two ladies. Not sure how many together. BamaChicken used to have two of the blue boys in one pen together.

Very true. I guess it wouldn't be so bad having Buff and Blue Orph hens but I really wanted the roo to stand out. I'm not a fan of Splash, but black or blue would work for me. Ugh decisions decisions...
