Here's the pix, she is upright and being still. Anyone know what's happened here? this swollen area is very "warm". The "intestine" or whatever it was that was hanging out of her was about the size of a man's little finger in width.

If this is terminal, let me know and I will put her down asap. She's been a great hen and no need to suffer if this is going to kill her in a few days. She wasn't distressed as I gently managed to get this back in her fwiw.

any help appreciated, mitch

This doesn’t look like a simple prolapsed vent, but more like she has been vent pecked and cannablized. I would separate her in a dog crate with food and water. Spray Vetericyn Wound spray on her vent and apply Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a day. A warm soak in Epsom salts water may be helpful, to get her healing. If more of her intestines come out, then she may need to be put down. Try to give her some water with electroelytes and vitamins.

Reasons for vent pecking are overcrowding, too little protein in the diet, boredom, not getting out to free range, and too much light inside the coop. Sometimes certain breeds can be agressive. What do you feed?

Purina crumbles. We only have 8 hens in2500 ft. W/a huge coop.

Are there older chickens, roosters or male ducks around her? That damage looks pretty bad. She will need to have daily warm soaks for a while and kept islolated for some time until she begins to heal. A wire dog crate with food and water would allow her to remain with other chickens. Keep her away from flies, or there would be danger of maggot infestation (flystrike) in the wound.
