Orpingtons - An ocean apart??

Love seeing the pictures and yes...I also....didn't realize what breeds brought about the "australorp"!!

I would love to go to Indiana show but that is a distance so probably won't make the Oct. show.
I really appreciate the book posting and hope to continue learning more on both UK and American Orpingtons.

Actually, our LF Buffs are standard size. You should see the shows down here. This fall we should have Buffbeauty, cowboygourmet, Terry Britt, Jeff Thorton, Hall Family and more. This fall we will be showing a full display of Buff Orpingtons and possibly of Black Orpingtons.

Display: A cock (over one year), hen (over one year), cockerel (under one year), pullet (under one year) for each variety and at least one trio of that variety of any age.

Jeff and I was talking, along with other members of the American Orpington Poultry Fanciers (AOPF) concerning sponsoring a qualifying meet for the acceptance of the British Orpington as a seperate and distinct breed. There is the issue of a five year wait. However, since they have bred to the UK Standard for more than enough years, there is a possiblity that a waiver could be issued. They are not a new breed, just new type to our shores. No, my oppinion has not changed (lets not go there), but to preserve the American type, the British Orpington should e accepted in the SOP as a distinct breed, seperate from the American Orpington and Australorp.

You must just have very small children lol. Your 'Gent' looks as big a small labrador!

I am still new to all these chicken breeds, however I do know that Orpingtons are one of the most, if not THE most popular breed in the UK. I don't know if people just like the look or if it's because of it's attachment to the Royal Family.
On a little side note... I can't really see much of a difference between the Australorp and the Jersey Giant. If the American Orpington looks the same again, why not just merge the three? lol

kathyinmo: Thank you Kathy. I hope you have many to work with that kick butt.

fifelakelooper: I know what you mean. I do not like traveling too far out of my comfort zone either. The Ohio Natls is about as far as I go. Kentuckiana is almost as far. Both are great shows and alot of fun. BUT, we only get Crossroads on the east side of the US about every 5 years so you may like to see this show. It will be a good one.

rarely bored: I can read that book over and over again and see stuff that I forgot. Someone of the Orp thread posted a link to the entire book. I have photo'd about 2/3's of the book. You have to remember this hobby was 10 times or more bigger 100 years ago, which means there was 10 times as many superb breeders to pick from.

howlinggood: Yes these Buff Sports are something aren't they? I was very lucky to get 5. Only 2 are girls. The other 2 boys are younger but do not show the size of potential as this big boy. Remember he had just turned 7 months old. And I know the Buff leakage will be passed down so I must only keep the best girls to use with hopefully one super quality male that I am getting (hopefully) this fall.

I am familiar with the United Orpington Club, which is the current recognized foremost club of orpington breeders, and am proud to be a member of the club. It is an excellent club, well established, and I encourage all who are interested in the breed to join. It is a very active club, with great members that I have found to be very helpful and encouraging, even though I do not show. As fewer than 1% of poultry keepers show, that is important to me. The club is "dedicated to all Orpingtons, Large Fowl and Bantam, and to the breeders of this fine fowl." Members receive a quarterly newsletter, "All Orp," an annual breeder's list, and membership list. The newsletter is just fabulous, too! I always look forward to it. You will find, on the club website:
History
Standard
Breeding/Exhibition Tips
Photo Gallery
UOC Officers
Informational Articles
Member Classifieds
Constitution/ By-laws
and more!
The club website is here: http://www.unitedorpingtonclub.com/

I suggest to the OP to contact officers and members of the club, and I am quite sure they could be helpful with answering some of your questions, too, as they have members with both Imported English Orps and APA standard Orps. Heck, many enjoy them both!

I'm not sure if these pictures will pop up or not...these are my part UK and part American Orpingtons. I have to choose between my roos. I'd love to have a splash roo but the black roo is larger. I believe you go by shape or form first....then color. Could I get some input on the looks of these roos...? They are 9 wks. now. The last picture is a group shot. I THINK I have the two roos and 3 pullets.
The camera date says 5/18 but I took these this morning. Also...the first two shots didn't post. How do you post multiple shots on one thread???
