OT: Treatment of Women In Hardware Stores (Yes, this is a Rant)

Heh - you're sure your husband wasn't in cahoots with him to make you build a smaller coop?!

Yeah.... this does not have anything to do with being a woman or anything to do with your age, or the type of shirt you wear. This is all about ignorant people getting jobs and only wanting the check at the end of the week. It is really sad what has happened to customer service. Its even worse when it happens in restaurants now. Most of these places are run by kids and supervised by kids. Getting your order right has about the same odds as winning the lottery. Then, if you look in the kitchen for sanitation, you would probably go home for dinner

So this is just the way our world is becoming unfortunately

Some people can be a real pain in the ***.

We had a woman come in the shop one day and want to talk to a mechanic. I was standing there so I asked what she needed help with.... She again said she wanted to talk to a mechanic. Meanwhile there I am standing in my GM Goodwrench Uniform with the usual amount of dirt and grease acquired in half a day of working on vehicles. One of the service writers was standing there and told her I was a mechanic... She then started muttering about me not being old enough... blah blah blah...

I am 24 and female. I also happen to be an ASE certified Automotive Technician with an Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology.

I also worked in the TLE at Walmart for a while and had a older gentleman come in for service and leave when he learned that a female was going to be working on his car... Just an oil change mind you.

So, its not just men thinking that women can't possibly know about something that is generally male oriented, women can be just as guilty.

My husband works at a hardware store that sells trailers and I've worked there before as well. The owner is a very nice guy, the only way he treats women any different is that he goes out of his way to help them. I've seen alot more women walk away with something free then men.

There were comments made about it cutting into the store's profit by having employees make cuts, especially on the less expensive pieces of lumber.

If the store has good customer service and gets a reputation for good customer service the business gained will more than make up for any loss from cutting lumber.

Not only that - they are getting paid whether or not they are cutting lumber, stocking 78 cent bolts or standing around gossiping at the "help center".

Wow, I cannot believe all the people in this thread who had negative things to say about Home Depot. I wish all of them lived near and shopped at the HD on S.R. 135, Greenwood, IN. I have never had anything but great service from well-trained employees with thoroughly positive attitudes about their job. If I have a heavy load or something cumbersome to take out, guys and women offer to help me without my having to ask. Were it not for the help/information from the actual former carpenters who work in the lumber area, I never would have been able to build the coops that I'm building. I cannot say that for what I see at Menards down the street.

Another bad Menards experience. I LOVE those. I hate that bleeping store and the way they treated me as an employee.

I haven't had too much trouble with the hardware stores..

I did have a very enfuriating experience at a local auto part store. These people really p*ssed me off.

My truck had been giving me trouble. Not wanting to start at certain times, but then starting just fine at others. So father suggested I go to the auto part store and have my electrical system checked for free. So I did. I pulled up and walked in and was helped by the first young man.

He seemed new and unsure on how to work the electrical testing equipment, but was helpful so I bared with him. He hooked it up and told me start the truck and keep it steady at 2,000 RPMs. This I did and a few seconds into the test my vehicle cut completely off. My truck had NEVER shut off while it was on, it always gave me trouble startING. I tried to explain this. The young man, sure he had done something wrong, went in with me in tow to ask for more experienced help.

Behind the desk was a middle-aged man wearing a camou hat, in desperate need of an iron and a shave. Looked at me and told me "She doesn't know what she's talking about. It's her transmission and not her electrical system." and walked off into the backroom not to be seen by me again.

Come to find out the ONLY thing wrong with my truck was the battery cables. The man was an idiot and had I not been so furious about his "comment" I would have spoke to a manageer..

LOL. Sorry, reading your rants, brought out one of my own..

Well, poor customer service is the norm in my area.

I was in Home Depot with my mil, we were getting 20 2x4x16's. There was a group of employees standing around chit-chatting, I asked for help loading them, the group disbanding immediately. When we had all but two of them, someone showed up to help us. He did that buy watching. Then he helped us pushed the cart to the counter and proceeded to count them for the clerk. Then he walked away.

The same store sent me on a wild goose chase. I went from one end of the store back to the other 3 times. Before I finally asked to see a manager. Boy, did he get an ear full.
