OT: Treatment of Women In Hardware Stores (Yes, this is a Rant)

Another bad Menards experience. I LOVE those. I hate that bleeping store and the way they treated me as an employee.

Farmgirlie, I understand what you're saying. I get the feeling of employee unhappiness while in Menards. It just seems to pervade the place. I'd hate to work there. I called the home office about one of their managers one time; talk about a rude jerk; honestly, I could not believe that he all but called me a liar when I said that I had gotten some information about one of their products from one of the employees. He said he KNEW that none of his employees would say such a thing. I just about came unglued.

I'd have to agree with yotetrapper on this.

I am 16 and I am amazed at the lack of work ethic of other people my age. They are so used to doing nothing. Everything is so easy and automated now a days and parents giving them whatever they want.

I've had a job since I was 12 and held down two jobs since I was 15 and get told by my peers that I am crazy for making an effort to support myself. I enjoy working and knowing that I did a good job, teens these day just don't care.

true story ,
About 10 yrs ago I had to take my truck in to the ford dealer for a recall while I was there I told them to give me 2 new tires on the front. and rotate them for me.

When I went to get the truck they told me the price and it was twice what they had quoted me.
I asked why and the guy told me I needed new tires on the back too so he put them on for me. I said in a very loud voice I'm not paying for them.
Oh and the place was crowded . And he says well you have to pay for them we put them on.
me: did you call and ask me if it was ok

guy: well no, I just figured it was ok

me : i'll wait while you take them off and put my tires back on

guy: I don't have your tires any more

Well after I hit the roof he told me I wouldn't be charged for them.

I'm not from the south I don't do anything with a smile and when I'm upset everyone within a 12 mile radius knows it. I don't know the meaning of the word tact and whats more I don't want to know it.

I know what you mean about the hardware store as I got all the materials to build the house. So DH could be here doing the building I always went and made the order.

There are few key words that can be used to let them know you know what your talking about . I just throw them in the conversation for affect.
these are : engineered trusses
dead man
sub-floor
things like that

just for the record.......my comments were just in general........We have only had one bad experience at our Home Depot. All the rest of the problems there were in our favor. We always get home and find they did not ring up all the stuff we got. So i really enjoy our home depot

And someday, with your work ethic, you'll OWN the company instead of just working for it.

Good for you! It cheers my heart to see young people putting their heart into what they do.

After spending about $30,000 at a local lumber co. building our house, I stopped in one day to buy a few 4' X 8' sheets of cedar chipboard. They happily took my $$ at the counter and told me to drive around back for loading. The guys happily put the sheets of stuff on top of my car . . . and began to walk away. I said, "Excuse me, are you going to fasten these down?" They smirked and said, "Oh, we don't do that here. You have to do that yourself." Having come unprepared to do so, I climbed up there and proceeded to throw all the sheets willy nilly all over their floor, one at a time. They came running and said, "Hey, what are you doing?" I said, "Returning these." Never shopped there again!

There is no need of saying or doing anything for mostly you are addressing the clueless - whether you be male or female. Save your breath. I went recently to pick up some 16ft. steel roofing for our house. The two young guys that were assigned to pull it out of the racks and load it for me started pulling out the wrong material right after I had placed my hand on what I wanted. Then they went to get the fork truck.

I measured between the racks to determine the aisle width. It was 12 feet. I told them that they were not going to be able to use the fork truck since the aisle was narrower than the sheet length. Finally they started carrying a few sheets at a time to my truck.

I warned them to be very careful if they weren't used to handling sheet metal because the stuff can be vicious. No sooned having said that, one of the poor guys cut his wrist open on a corner of one of the sheets and bled like nobody's business.

Finally after about one and one half hours they got it all loaded. What should have taken 30 minutes max took 3 times that. I felt sorry for these boys who seemed more like Laurel and Hardy and were totally unknowledgeable about the simplest thing. I requested that I be able to drive my truck next to the rack so we could simply pull the sheets off the rack and onto the truck (like another local company allows you yo do). This was a no-no because of insurance restrictions they said.

Another time at the same store I asked a young fellow to show me their water closets. "You've got me on that one" he replied, "what's a water closet?"

"When you go into your bathroom" I answered, "that little elliptical ceramic receptacle that sits by the wall, well that's a water closet."

It's not us its THEM! Lord help them and us!

Around here most, if not all, stores will help you get things onto your vehicle, but won't fasten them down. Unfortunately, it means that someone as sometime had sued the company (scratched paint, item fell off, item broke, something like that) and the company had to pay out to fix it. If their employees don't attach the item to the car, they're not liable for any damage the item may cause. It's a consequence of living in a litigious society.
