I have a crested polish roo and the feathers on top of his head are constantly picked out - sometimes drawing blood. He's the only crested breed I have. What can I do to prevent this? he needs a chicken helmet!
separate him... one of these days he will get pecked hard enough to cause crookneck (from damage to brain)... unfortunately this often happens when you keep a polish with others... try and sort out which birds can go with him (after the area has healed...long as there is red and scabs the birds will continue to peck) and make a separate pen for them?
DL - is exactly right it seems the polish need to be by themselves as a breed to do well once one gets singled out
they keep going back to that one- until they are dead- I have never had luck double roo with the polish like other breeds- I have even put them with Faverolles which are the most docile of breeds and they will peck the crest all out- by do well i mean grow to their best potential - Part of it is when they are with other breeds their lack of vision makes them easy targets - then of course the picked on one gets flighty -- good luck
