Other people's attitudes toward chickens*Update* Another one

I went to the doctor's surgery today and asked the doc for antibiotics for Hope. The vet just can't get any! So I figured desperate times calls for desperate measures. The doctor prescribed antibiotics that he knows will be safe to use for chicks and I've given her a bit, much diluted with water.
I'm wondering how long it will take to have an effect? She's extremely run down, having been sick for so long. She's really battling to eat so I made her some scrambled eggs and she ate a tiny bit of it. I want to give her something liquid with nutritional value that won't make her worse. The vet said no milk. Any suggestions???

No, but I will. Did read "The good good pig" by Sy Montgomery. Excellent book and she's written one about her chickens now, which I'm trying to get a copy of.

Birdology? i have that, it's really well written, even if sh does get some chicken facts wrong

i havn't read the good good pig yet, tho....

Rest in Peace, little Hope.
"If love alone could save you, you never would've died"

Sorry to hear about Hope. I had saved a 4 legged chicken from a TSC but she did not make it either but she did get an extra week of life. Yesterday I had one of my chickens get sick from the heat and I have her in the house now and that is where she is going to stay for the day since it suppose to be just as hot or hotter today.
I do what I can to save chickens but going to a vet is just not in the budget, but I will call if needed.

That's exactly what I say to people when they say this about any other creature. Species elitism really ticks me off. Do they REALLY think humans are more important than ANYTHING on this planet? Please, give me a break!

You've just quoted me! I say that all the time. In fact I'm planning on taking it one step further...
I'm planning on getting another tattoo soon, well, as soon as I can afford to go to a really skilled artist. I don't have a design yet, but I'm thinking a hand holding a small chick with the French word "egalite" (with accents on the e's). It means equality. I'm thinking a bit closer to the time I want to ask all the BYC members to post photo's/drawings so I can choose one for my tat. What do you think?

You should do it! Did I mention that I'm a graphic designer?

Sorry to hear about Hope... you gave her more of a chance than anyone.

That's cool, you can design my tattoo if you want?
I'm devastated about losing Hope, even my broody hen hatching two more chicks today didn't really cheer me up. And I love chicks. We now have 9 little fluffy things, but I can only think of one. Hell, if only I got her sooner! I said to my husband if it was a human baby we could've taken her to hospital and they would've helped her, but because it's a chicken we couldn't save her. It's so unfair!!
But at least she had 5 days of love, cuddles and warmth. She wasn't just another chicken anymore, she was special.

Had a chat with Hope's previous owner and made him promise in future to bring me any sick/injured chicks immediately. Apparently Hope was sick for quite awhile, not just a week as he told me at first. He looked a bit sheepish when I told him about the effort we made with her and that it would've helped if we got her sooner. Now he says to me "Sumi, you are great" for helping his chick. I didn't tell him what I think of him for killing her!
So hopefully no more sad endings!

Hi everyone. Finally good news! Hope's previous owner brought me another sick chick yesterday. Same problem as Hope, it seems. I phoned the vet and asked him for advice. Gave her antibiotics and I went and bought some multivitamin stress medicine for chickens to give her a boost. I think I might've overdosed a bit on the antibiotics as she's much, much better today

I'm calling this one Faith.
This guy has a funny attitude towards his chickens. He now wants to expand and get something like 2000 chicks and raise them, but I'm worried. He doesn't want to help one sick chick, how the hades is he going to cope with 2000??? Yesterday he asked me if a month-old egg will still hatch. He has no idea how much to feed his birds, Faith was ravenous when she arrived yesterday, Hope was starved... I'm seriously worried.
I'm thinking of asking the vet to pop in at his farm ans see what's going on. Try and help and advice this guy.
At least he's dumping his sick chicks by me so I can help them. And he's not getting Faith back when she's better!

Bless you for all you are doing to make the world a better place, even if it's one tiny chick at a time.

I agree that too many people have a very negative attitude towards other organisms. It's the same attitude that causes people to step on ants on sidewalks for no reason at all.

I'm no PETA member or anything, but it disheartens me to see someone actively go out of their way to destroy a life, just because..... well no reason, boredom maybe. I'm the first person to grab the Raid if I have a wasp attacking me, but to destroy something that's not causing you harm, not in your way, and not competeing with you for food or shelter? Kind of sociopathic if you think about it.

I think that's the same mentality that people have towards chickens. They have no inherant respect for life in general because they're so focused on how super important they think humans are. I understand that farmers need to make hard decisions to maintain thier livelyhood, but have some respect for the animals that make your life possible. Don't sneer at someone who does want to go the extra mile to save a chick. It's a noble act with no expectation of return by someone with the resources and will to do it. It's not something to be mocked, just as a farmer's livelyhood isn't something to be mocked.

At least that guy did eventually admit you were doing a good thing.

I am sure Hope enjoyed what little time she had with you. Keep making the world a better place to live in.
