Our $375.00 First Egg

Got me to thinking about cost to date for my four chicks. $169 for coop kit, $11.00 for the four chicks, water bottle was $7, feed dispenser was $8, three bags of feed to date, $15, heat lamp, $17, material for tractor was $170, brooder bin was $12....first egg will be over $409. Each bird now valued at $102.25. Costco sells them for $4.99 each...already prepared.

Think I got taken....many of the purchases are long term, at least. Still to purchase are straw for the nesting boxes and coop bottom, grower feed, layer feed, oyster shell. At 208 eggs a year per hen (624 eggs, our rooster, who does not contribute, will be going adios, amigo) the price per egg should drop considerably, to maybe $14 a dozen the first year.

I really try not to think about all of the money spent on my peeps...it's too depressing! Lol But, I must say, that your first egg is quite lovely & beautiful...and you will remember that little egg & the feeling it gave you for the rest of your life...priceless!

Just think about it.....isn't it amazing how we all get SO excited about that first egg?! Lol. Like its a little precious gift made just for us! I guess most of us consider these cute little peeps as our kids, babies or pets...and we treat them as such! You can tell...i'm addicted!

It's not only the first egg, but the entertainment we get from them! This morning, while in the run, one starting darting about like it had found a tasty morsel, and the others kept chasing her to figure out what she had....nothing! I think this particular chick (Alice) is pulling their chain. She was like..."what...what.." I was just doing my morning workout...get a life, guys!" The rooster is trying to keep the three girls in line, but this morning he picked on the wrong girl, she was in a surly mood and stared him down, and her little sister joined in with chest bumps and wings flying. Now he knows what it is to be henpecked....served him right. They are not Orion Slave Girls (Star Trek reference there for us Trekkers).
