Hi Jarsheart,

I am so sorry to hear of your silkie rooster - I know how it feels to ask oneself could I have done anything to prevent this from happening - the answer is NO! We can torment ourselves about what we may have done in hindsight but it is never easy to accept - let alone prevent what we don't understand.

I too have a Silkie Rooster - he is very gentle, none of his offspring are as kind and considerate as he is, he is unique as your rooster was to you - mourn his loss but give yourself credit for having given him such a wonderful life!

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time

Well, the necropsy results are in, and the results show that he did not have any disease. Everything was normal. So the vet says that nocturnal mites must have been the cause of his severe anemia. It would also explain the anemia in the hen I brought in to use as a donor for a blood transfusion to try to save the rooster. MITES !! The vet said that his immune system was down because he was fighting off avian pox (dry form) which made the mite problem deadly. I have two droopy hens. Brought one in the house for TLC. Spent several hours with my husband powdering all of the chickens down, and cleaning the hen house. Still crying over the lost rooster. I am now doing INTENSE research on how to deal with the invisible mite problem (did not see one mite today). Thanks to everyone for their kindness. I hope someone can learn from my experience to prevent this from happening to their beloved birds.

thanks for sharing with us the results of the necropsy, I'm so sorry to hear that he didn't make it. We had mites just recently and it was a job getting rid of them in the coop, on the birds and me. I just went into the house in the dark to see if I could see any on the perches or walls, I didn't but am paranoid that they might come back. again I hope sorry and hope your 2 hens will be okay.
