I thought I would share a small project we have going on. Our birds are layer breeds. For some reason this year the broodies only wanted to be broody in the nest boxes and not where we would relocate them to. So for the few hatched we did this year, when a hen would go broody, we would leave her be, place eggs in the incubator until they hatched and then stick them under the broody at night and move them to a separate pen the next day. On our last batch, we had 2 hens go broody and only 4 of the 9 eggs to hatch. Both hens wanted the babies, so we decided to attempt some broilers.

Tractor Supply had both Cornish Rock and Red Rangers they had just gotten in that day, so I picked up 4 CR and 8 RR and we stuck them under the two mamas along with the 4 EE that hatched. Everyone got adopted and the two hens are co-parenting. We left them in the grow out pen for 1 week to bond. The timing was such that our garden (a 50x40 area) was done for the year and we had let the weeds take over. So we cut the weeds down so the chicks could be seen and move the 2 mamas and the 16 chicks into the garden.

Our plan is for the mamas to teach the chicks to forage in this safe area. Once the broiler chicks no longer need the mamas, we will remove the mamas and EE chicks to the layer pen and leave the broilers for a bit longer in the garden pen. Once we are confident they know where “home” is, we will let them totally free range and then get locked in the garden area at night.

At this point they are 1 day shy of 2 weeks old. The broilers are just now starting to show a size difference from the EE’s. They adore their mamas and act exactly like the EE’s in they let mama scratch the area and then dive in for the goodies. They have a feeder in the pen right now for free access food but I hardly ever see them at it. Despite not seeing them at the feeder, their crops are super full! Once the food is gone from that feeder, we will move to feeding 2x a day so they spend the time foraging and not sitting at the feeder. I expect to process the CR first and then a few weeks later the RR.

If people are interested, I will post updates as we go along. Here we are at almost 2 weeks into our project:

I let my EE chicks from Ideal in the garden. Worked great. They left the squash & cucumbers alone. Everything else died in the heat.

Planning on letting the CX cruise the garden, but the puppies destroyed the kitchen garden, I should plant this one for fall.

Please keep us updated.

I would like to see frequent updates and comparisons between your Cornish and Red Rangers. And MOST importantly, when butcher time comes, the final size and taste results between the Cornish and red rangers. Include pictures. Final weights, texture, appearance and taste are important.

Week 3:
Everyone is still there and doing well! Mamas did a great job teaching them to forage as you can see them searching for their own goodies. The CR are starting to get a size difference on the other chicks. Some of the RR are also getting a size difference on the EEs, but others are about the same size. The EEs do have about 4 days head start on the broilers, so I expect the size difference to really show in the next week or two.

The little stinkers (all of the breeds) have learned that the giant humans bring good food and escape the wire to greet us any time we go outside. Won’t be long they will not fit through the wire, but by that time they will be ready for complete free ranging.

Pictures aren’t working for loading. I will try on another post to get them up.

Week 4:
I’m a little sad because we lost one RR and one CR. Not sure what happened to the Red Ranger; found it in the pen. The Cornish Rock however committed suicide by going into the puppy’s area.... Of course the two we lost were the biggest two, but that’s farm life I guess.

All remaining are doing very well and slowly growing. For 4 weeks old, I would say the free ranging has slowed down their growth, even the CR. But if it makes them taste better, I’m okay with it!

This may sound very morbid but I laughed to the point of tears at the "committed suicide by going into the puppy's area". Picturing a rubber chicken toy being flung around.

Well, actually you are not too far off from what I came upon lol. The puppy did decide to eat/remove the feathers first

morbidly funny is true :gig
But the puppy could get out and wipe out the flock someday, which I am sure you have thought of already
I have a shelter dog that was turned in because the widow couldn't handle him. I got a shock collar because 110lb dog trying to drag you across the yard with a pinch collar on had to stop...He would chase the hawks and wild turkeys, kill the coons, possums and skunks and went bonkers when I brought home chickens. Took about a month of working with him daily.. but I now can leave him out with my chickens and turkeys, no issues. He still chases the predators. Something to think about if the puppy proves hard to train.
