Hello! Not only am I new to chickens, I am new to this type of site and forums and threads. Forgive me if I don't know the lingo or how to maneuver about in this particular arena.
We did not set out to have a chicken. Our Gertrude showed up in our backyard on July 17, 2014 and never left. Probably because we fed her. And then after a few months of her just hanging about and roosting in the bushes or the holly tree, we were going to have a wicked and prolonged ice storm, so my husband caught her and we put her up in the warm and dry for a couple of weeks and then gave her a roomy pen. She has been happy and even started laying eggs! About 18 days ago, she became broody and pretty much stopped eating or drinking. And she will.not.stop. She got so upset when we would take her egg, that we had left her a fake egg all the time. That was a mistake on our part. We tried to break her broodiness by removing her fake egg and then blocking her from the nest, but all for naught. Now I have a woman that is going to call me when a black sex linked girl is hatched so maybe we can slip her in and Gertrude will feel fulfilled as a chicken and we can all get back to our lives.
Why not get her fertilized eggs? We live in the city, like center of the city, and chicken keeping is an iffy proposition. With a quiet hen, and our large property, we should be fine. A loud rooster? Ummm, not so much. Can't take the chance she would hatch a male.
We do not know what breed she may be...after looking at her picture, the people at the feed store thought she might be a game chicken, or a mix with game in her, possibly some banty, too, ad she is smaller and her eggs would be considered medium at best.
Here she is:
She has two different colored eyes...one red with a large pupil, and one green with a small pupil. She can look kindly or demonic with just a turn of her head. LoL
If you know what she might be, please let me know. The possibility of game chicken is strong as there is a house not terribly far away that raises what has to be fighting chickens. I am glad she escaped if she is from there.
Gertrude has been a great addition to our family of rescues. We also have 4 cats and 2 dogs.
If anyone has advice or tips, I am always open to suggestions. Our goal is to keep everyone as healthy and happy as we can.
