Well, after a month of research, ordering, work, errands, etc. our chicken coop and chicken run are finally done! (The coop is 4' x 5', and the run is 20' x 25'.)Our Silver Grey Dorking chicks (three weeks old now) are quite happy with their new digs, and are getting used to their new surroundings. We're sitting on two acres of land in a small town in a rural county, so it's high time this land started providing for us in some form. (FWIW, we're also starting some raised beds for veggies this year.)
I had some bantams once when I was a kid, and my only other chicken experience was while working as a historic interpreter on a living history farm. (We worked the farm each day as they would have in the 19th c., and interpreted the agricultural practices, etc. of the time.) After 30+ years in the reenacting/living history/museum community both as a vocation and avocation it's no surprise we'd pick a historic and endangered heritage breed.

Wish us luck! I've certainly been enjoying many of the threads on here and have learned a great deal from the community y'all have built here. Thanks for letting me brag a little on our work so far.

That is gorgeous!!! Beautiful colours you chose

Thanks the oldchick, I purposely positioned the coop so that the walnut tree (courtesy of one of our squirrels who forgot his buried nut) would shade the coop after noon in the summer. It shades most of the run too on up in the evening which I like for the bird's sake.
Rachy, the colors match the house. While I live in a small community that allows us to keep chickens in town, I still wanted our effort to be proof that you can do it and it not be all trashed out and a benefit to the community.
