Thanks for the info on the sand. I saw other threads talking about chickens getting their crop too full of sand and problems arising from that. Yup, spoken like a true overprotective mother hen

I do like that hanging tray, cool idea.

Haven't done CL yet. Currently, there are quite a few roos on there in my area from a couple of rare breeders only a few miles away looking for homes for their roos too. I am trying to convince/guilt my neighbor to take him, but he already has three. Thanks for the idea, any are appreciated.

Chickens eating WITHOUT sand would be like you eating without teeth! It is so vital I mix it in my gamecocks feed every day. Why do you want to get rid of the rooster? The hens will be MUCH happier with him there. I have worked in laying houses and they require one rooster per ten hens in their houses. A fertile egg is much more nutritious and therefore the requirement in the laying industry. Sounds like your off to a good start. Good Luck!

I do have grit, it just seems like an awful lot of sand that cakes up on the veggies I give them and wondered if it's just too much.

I need to get rid of the rooster due to town regulations. I do not have enough yard space to harbor these chickens and if any neighbor complains to the town about the crowing, I will ultimately have to get rid of all of my chickens. Unfortunately it's more of a no choice issue, especially with one neighbor 2 houses down. She calls to complain to the town on every little thing anywhere near her house, construction, lawn mowing at odd hours, you name it. Sad but true. I can easily keep chickens without roosters, no one can see my back yard and my one neighbor is in love with these little guys.
