Hello! I just wanted to share our story of Bernadette. 😊 We just got out first ever chicks in April, and have been babying them like crazy. Bernadette is an olive egger, and from everything I read, olive egger chicks who have a rust spot on their head are 99% roosters. So we raised Bernie with love, knowing we might have to give her up one day (we live in the city, so no roosters). She even acted like a rooster- not super friendly, let the other chickens go first with snacks and going to bed, etc. About two months ago she got super sick with coccidiosis, and we thought for sure we were going to lose her. Surprisingly, she pulled through and became infinitely more friendly! We still questioned if she was a rooster, but figured we'd wait till she crowded. Well yesterday she started acting weird. Went into the coop during the day multiple times, even though it was 100 degrees outside, and started digging around in the bedding. Well, apparently the space directly in front of the coop door was her chosen nest, because about 20 minutes after I started worrying about her, we saw her lay her first egg! 🥹 We are definitely "chicken are pets" people, and are so dang excited that Bernie gets to stay, and we got our first ever egg! 🥰
