It was a very eggciting long weekend. Our 4 RIR turned 20 weeks old and 1 of them started laying. We knew we were close as the most mature looking of them finally started squatting as we bent down to pet her. The following day she was making a big racket, with a comical BA-KAWK sound repeatedly. And then around mid-afternoon I heard a very loud BA-KAWK coming from inside the nesting boxes. A second or two later she shot out of the coop and joined her 3 sisters in the run. I figured that had to be the moment. I went into the run and lifted the nest box lid to find my two fake eggs had some very real company. It was a decent sized (medium) light brown egg with a perfectly hard shell and just a titch of blood.

The next day they were quiet, and no eggs. But the following day, yesterday, I found another egg in the same nesting box (the one with the fake eggs). The second one was smaller, but also had a hard shell and was perfectly clean.

So we are very happy to start to get a return. As of now, each egg cost $504 – LOL. But I’m sure the other three will start laying in the coming days and weeks, as another one or two have started to squat.

The details of the past 20 weeks are as follows:

April 15th, rec’d 4 day old RIR from MYpetchicken. Moved outside to the coop and run around 7 weeks of age. By that point they were on Nature’s Best organic grower feed. During their 16th week I started to transition them to organic layer crumble form the same brand. I also feed them organic scratch from the same brand and garden produce that is not good enough for humans (cabbage that has split, overripe cucumber, tomatoes with blossom end issues). They stay most hours of the day in the 100 sq ft run but we get them out to free range a little bit every day too – the kids love that, and so do the birds.

That 1st egg is so exciting (and the following ones aren't bad either)!

LOL - no I do not intend to have the first egg bronzed or anything. I will wait to get a few more and then make eggs for the family.

I thought it was strange that our very first egg was a good medium or maybe even large size. The following 11 have all been small size. Well on Saturday I finally made the eggs for breakfast for the family, and that first egg was a double yolk! I felt very lucky to have my first egg a double yolk. Is that common?

The eggs were wonderful - BTW - of course. And now my 6 y/o boy likes to get the eggs out of the nesting boxes. We have been getting 2 per day and the third girl has started squatting, so maybe 3 soon. The forth looks a few weeks behind the rest, even though they were all hatched the same day. But no worries there, she'll start production eventually.

Congratulations! Our RIR girls are about the same age. I bought mine on 3/10 and we started getting eggs on 8/2. Finally, as of yesterday, the "hold out" of my ten laid her first egg. I have 2 Leghorns from 4/10, one of them started laying a few days ago.

Is it normal for the first eggs to be small? How can I tell which chickens are laying? I have 5 rhoade island reds and 5 amerecanas. Feeding laying mesh mixed with chick starter. Should I start with straight laying pellets. They are 20 weeks old

Yes, it's normal...can take days, weeks, or months for eggs to get up to a 'large' size.

Best not to feed layer until all birds are laying...or some never feed layer and provide oyster shells in a separate container.

As an update - the 3rd girl looks to have come online this week. So that is about 22 1/2 weeks for her. The 4th girl still looks to be a few weeks away, based on her smaller comb and waddles. With 2 girls online, we already had enough eggs. With 3 producing, we will have excess to give to our friends or local food pantry. When the 4th one comes online, we will have even more to give away! I think we should have started with 3 instead of 4, but oh well.
