We’ve raised ducks for a couple years now but we’ve never had a girl stay dedicated enough to hatch eggs. Well our year old golden layer hybrid finally committed and her first baby hatched today!!!! We’re so excited!!! She’s got a few more eggs to go but she’s a great mom. Definitely momma bear. She’s extremely protective *HISSSSS*

Holy heck! That’s a lot of babies! Our girl’s sitting on roughly five duck eggs and a chicken egg....still not sure how that chicken egg got in there...

Congrats on the duckling. Be sure to secure them in a very safe area away from the drakes and the predators. Mama won’t be able to protect them from anything with teeth.
My flock lives around my barn. She’s conveniently made her nest inside the barn inside one of the stalls. I’ve closed off the stall to keep the dogs away. I keep the drakes away as much as I can (chasing them out of the barn and closing them out, blocking the holes they dig etc) but they’re like squids. They just squeeze their way through. So far they’ve been pretty polite, keeping their distance. Probably because momma bird is more of a momma bear. The only creatures she lets near her nest are the recently hatched chicks and the valgus silkie that lives in the barn. She’s VERY aggressive/protective. I’m actually quite pleased since all of my chickens have never been that protective and she’s over there like KEEP YO DISTANCE YOU FLUFFER
